I have travelled all over Europe and I have never had to show my passport.
Sometimes if arriving by air they ask to see it because at some airports they don't have a separate EU gate, but not always.

I am British, but an immigrant here in Spain, whichever way I look at it.
The ridiculous thing is that because I have been out of the UK for over 12 months, the UK class me as a foreigner!
If I go back, and destitute, I have to wait for one year before they will consider helping me! I still pay taxes in the UK! and here in Spain!

The truth of the matter is no one knows what the outcome will be.
The top brains disagree, top business people, world leaders ect.
If the UK do actually go ahead with it, then they will find out.
What is needed, whether it succeeds of fails is a good captain at the helm. I personally do not see any contenders
