RE: Bush Voted For Obama?

I love this country. I don't love its leaders, or its government. Any of them.

We supposedly invaded Iraq to "free" its people. Our troops were defending oil wells, while the Baghdad Museum was being looted of priceless artifacts of, not just Iraqi history, but HUMAN history.

The oil is safe folks. "Mission Accomplished."

Yep. Our cause was noble alright.

Actually, I'm not jealous at all. The Oregon law that makes it illegal to pump your own gas creates jobs, when there isn't anything else.

And no, I don't think deficit spending is enlightened. Nor do I think they really care about Oregon. They care about raping the Lottery fund to pay for first class airline tickets when coach works just fine, and is more than they deserve. roll eyes

RE: Obama will win the american presidential ellection of 2012!

Years ago? Try right now. The majority of politicians in Oregon are only Oregonians by virtue of a decade or so. Few, if any, were actually born in this state. very mad

RE: I want this thread to hit 5 pages.

What happens to every Empire, you mean. Empires must expand. The more they expand, the more they suffer the expensive logistical necessities of maintaining their colonies. The more expensive that becomes, the more despotic they are to their citizens, the more enemies they make, the lower the standard of living for everyone but the elite.

Rome suffered barbarians at the gate. So did England. Now its the USA's turn. The simple mechanics of Imperialism.

Nebuchadnezzar had a dream. Danial interpreted his dream as having to do with Four Empires. Are we truly the empire of Iron and clay? An iron bureaucracy crushing the clay beneath it under the sheer weight of its inertia?

Something to think about... cool

If people could stick to the issues, instead of resorting to ad hominem and stereotyping, politics would actually be something worth the time and effort.

Not all Republicans are knuckle-dragging bigots, as Dude would like us to believe. And not all Democrats are brain-damaged hippies, standing in line for their welfare checks.

Thinking in terms of absolutes is a sign of mental illness. Never and always don't exist in the real world. Only in the minds of psychotics. cool

Your lack of respect for Republicans has already been proven. Sadly, Obamas' has as well. Why should they work with him? He never bothered to care, until America's latest election forced him to start caring.

Your threads constantly berate the GOP for this or for that, but you tend to ignore any concrete criticism of the DEMS. Or you offer a straw-man to shift the focus back to the GOP.

It might do you some good to look into a course in critical thought, and then apply it to your own position first. Then you have a pot to piss in. Until then, your enthusiasm and name-calling are built upon glaring logical fallacies.

Appeals to ignorance (REPS are Bad, the only logical course is DEMS).

Appeals to emotion (REPS are Bad, they steal from the poor, and give to the rich. So vote DEM).

Straw Man: Its not Obama's fault. It's Bush's fault (DEMs have had two years. Instead of addressing the public's primary concern first (i.e. THE ECONOMY), they pushed an expensive and ill-thought health-care reform bill, thus alienating a large percentage of the people who voted for him based on a benefit of the doubt (myself). Obama has FAILED as a leader, and no amount of blame-shifting will mitigate that truth.

RE: Obama will win the american presidential ellection of 2012!

All the whining is over J.

"Hope and change" amounted to tax and spend. Same BS from the DEMS, different day. You can point the finger at the GOP all you want. After 2 years with a Majority, the DEMS have run out of time.

"In short, the simple mechanics of Keynesian stimulus breaks down because government spending rises at the expense, dollar for dollar, of private spending. It's like taking a dollar out of your right pocket, putting it in your left pocket, and pretending you've an extra dollar to spend." -J.D Foster

The financial misdirection, back-room unilateral deals, and pork are at an end. Now King Chicago will HAVE to be bipartisan rather than just paying the concept lip service, and do the real WORK, rather than just lookin' and talkin' pretty.

As far as that political aspect of welfare, that is a topic for my thread about welfare reform. I only mentioned welfare in this thread to illustrate the misdirection occurring. Health-care reform is not our primary concern, although it is high on the list of priorities. If we can reign in the bureaucracy at all levels, and reduce its size, then we have a chance at becoming a viable super-power again. If not, well...Obama has done nothing to indicate he cares about this. Czar this, Czar that does not impress me as any real effort at making our country more efficient.

I'm not here to kick shins, T, but I think the last truly great Republican was Barry Goldwater.

People always tout Reagan as the GOP "messiah", but I doubt if Jesus could claim Alzheimer's as a defense for not keeping his house in order, (at the very least) and/or being culpable in treasonous conspiracy with the Iran/Contra fiasco.

Okay, to me, the fact that he's from California doesn't help either, but that's just my own personal bias.

RE: Obama will win the american presidential ellection of 2012!

The Bushney's are easy for some to hate. They've been prominent in American Politics for half a century or more. Everybody loves to hate the devil they know.

Whereas Obama came on this scene as a complete unknown, and his demagoguery got him exactly where he is today; receiving a resounding message from his country that his leadership ability has been, at the very least, questionable.

I've always been suspicious of voting for candidates for president that have no real leadership experience, ie: Legislators, and so has America, historically.

The fact is, senators make lousy Presidents. Historically, it's largely state Governors who are elected as the Executive of America. Only a desperate and deluded constituency votes a man into office who has never experienced baby-sitting a legislature, or contending with a Supreme Court, or balancing the regional budget.

Face it America, you got what you wanted, and then, you didn't like what you wanted. Isn't life ironic, sometimes, don't ya think?

Having and expressing an opinion of a political figure is not what this thread is about. This is about the relevance of Intellectual Property as it pertains to free speech.

Can we stick to the topic of the thread, please? I think we have enough threads about the politics of personality as it is.

Anti Obama/Pro-Obama Threads are pointing over there.

RE: All Americans: Where's your First Amendment now???

DMCA has nothing to do with defamation of character or libel. The use of political or celebrity names in parody or satire has nothing to do with intellectual property and would still be protected speech, unless Rosie the riveter was copyrighted and the owner wished to pursue legal action of unlicensed use of a copyrighted image.

As far as defamation or libel, that is something a lawyer would have to address. It is civil and not fraudulent, and thus in a gray area as far as criminality.

RE: All Americans: Where's your First Amendment now???

The details of what I do are proprietary, which means under the NDA I have signed, I can't go into things in any further detail about how this will affect me personally. Suffice it to say that I support any effort to make it a shared responsibility of web-users to abide by the DMCA.

You feel your semantics are better, eh? dunno

One man's darkness is another man's blindness. A greater darkness is where one assumes a posture of grace at the expense of another. You cannot step on someone else and then lift either of you up with his bootstraps.

RE: Druidry is officially declared a religion

One of the hardest jobs the Buddha had, well, at least according to the Lotus Sutra anyways, was to express in words what could not be expressed in words.

Semantics, all semantics, are useless in expressing this ultimate truth. We know, in our hearts, what is required of us. Avoiding that responsibility to ourselves is ultimately the cause of all of our suffering.

I think this is why the world is so divided. People consider their semantics to be better than another semantics in expressing that which exists beyond semantics.

RE: Druidry is officially declared a religion

The four virtues of the Buddha are: Courage, Compassion, Wisdom, and Vitality.

The courage to undertake the elimination of delusion, and seek truth, requires that we renounce selfishness, and live with truth in our hearts. Through strong and wise example, we lead others to compassion and enlightenment. Its all really just semantically different ways of treating the same material. cool

RE: All Americans: Where's your First Amendment now???

There will always be concerns for infringement of liberties whenever regulatory measures are instituted against and industry.

One of the "Liberties" that may be impacted are the rights of class-action suit lawyers to utilize patented or trademarked terms or products in their search strings for the purpose of generating business.

As far as negative press this may generate for a particular product or service, as long as the offering is not competitive to the brand in question, this is still considered fair use. This bill may impact that.

For anyone interested it might be informative to search and study what "Fair Use" constitutes. This endeavor may clear up a lot of misconceptions.

quote=gardenhackle]It would be wrong to assume there would be a few unexpected consequences, but that's just because you used the word "assume" instead of the words "be concerned". There is plenty of reason to be very cautious about unexpected consequences or potential for manipulation of the law in ways it wasn't intended. That's where the meat and bones of this discussion should be. For it to be a decent law, it would have to have NO negative impact on our right to free speech. But if it did, then it would be overturned by the first test before the Supreme Court. I don't actually see any "free speech" concerns. But we haven't turned over every rock yet. As it stands, if you don't have a website dedicated to peddling pirate merchandise or otherwise stealing intellectual property, it won't impact you at all. If you're an artist, writer or other creator or producer with copyrighted work and/or trademarks, etc., then it will be heavily in your interest to support it.

So I'm not really sure what's driving the agita here. I think some people and/or companies in a position to find their illegal cash cow has a bullseye on it's head are the ones doing the driving of the opposition to this. And they're driving it with "Free Speech" rationalizations because that works well. Any hint of our freedoms being infringed is enough to justifiably get people up in arms. It doesn't have to be a real threat to do it, either. And in this case, I don't think it is.

But I'm still open minded. If someone can present a GOOD case for how this would damage or infringe on the rights of any law abiding citizen, I'd be interested in hearing it. That would be enough to get me off the fence.
