Chess: Pawn to King Four...

A classic opening. White moves the King's pawn two spaces forward...

How many people love this old warhorse? I do. Every game is different. It's like an abstract ballet in pure mental space. Sure, the pieces make it easier to play, but...people have played it

Chess also has a language all it's own. Medieval. Brutal. Uncompromising. The weak-willed lose. Game Over. Check-mate, as the saying goes. Evolution and chaos in the middle of what is, on the surface, rigid order.

Chess is a good example of chaos theory at work as well. Thus the unique ballet that is every individual game. Grandmasters talk about every move opening "windows" of danger and opportunity. Classic Taoism, as well. This game has it all.

So, I have made the first move...

Who will take my challenge?devil

He announced change? Yep, its right here in my pocket, after taxes.

I opened my eyes and saw the worst US leader since Carter. doh

And duh! I am supporting him. Isn't that what taxation is all about? I don't have a choice in the matter. I pay Air Force One fuel bills every time he leaves Washington.

To come and talk to the people at Intel?

Hey, Mr. Tech Pres? Ever heard of Teleconferencing...?

Yep. Those Apaches that I saw flying over work when he went to Hilssboro sure did me a lot of good.barf

Not so sure about the Bush one, but the rest I don't have much of a problem with. Bush was popular with a lot of other people though, so I'm not going to attack the choice, its just not a name I'd have on my list. dunno

-Allow the President to invade a neighboring nation whenever he shall deem it necessary to repel an invasion, and you allow him to do so whenever he may choose to say he deems it necessary for such purpose, and you allow him to make war at pleasure. Study to see if you can fix any limit to his power in this respect, after having given him so much as you propose. If to-day he should choose to say he thinks it necessary to invade Canada to prevent the British from invading us, how could you stop him? You may say to him, — "I see no probability of the British invading us"; but he will say to you, "Be silent: I see it, if you don't."

-To provision of the Constitution giving the war making power to Congress was dictated, as I understand it, by the following reasons: Kings had always been involving and impoverishing their people in wars, pretending generally, if not always, that the good of the people was the object. This our convention understood to be the most oppressive of all kingly oppressions, and they resolved to so frame the Constitution that no one man should hold the power of bringing this oppression upon us. But your view destroys the whole matter, and places our President where kings have always stood.

So, in light of these numbers, would you not say encouraging small business rather than catering to big business is how we should go about creating real economic growth here in the US?

Am I truly a nut-job for wanting to be my own boss, and create well-paid and fulfilling work for my fellow Americans in the process of my own enrichment?

If that makes me a nut-job, then I'm not the only one, as Lennon said...dunno

RE: AMERICA IS GREAT.

Innovation is stifled by inordinate regulation. And Obama's job is not to "create" jobs, his job is to create new markets. Do you have any idea how much red tape I have to wade through just to get a business license to clean toilets? Let alone create a new product?

Didn't think so. People from other countries who have never tried to go into business for themselves in the US have no idea how much money it costs UP FRONT, before you even start MAKING money, to start an enterprise here in America.

As an example, currently Portland is experiencing a new wave of Cart Cuisine. That's a trailer that sells specialty cuisine, that sets up shop in the parking lot of another business in order to operate. Both businesses benefit from the increased foot traffic usually, and they are highly regulated by the state health department, and rightly so, for the risks involved in serving food to the public.

Now the city wants to impose new start-up fees on the carts, AND the businesses that own the lots. Why? Not because these fees make sense, but because the local government can't spend within its means, and wants more money anywhere it can get it.

By taking work away from entreprenuers?

Because that's what is going to happen. People already spend a fortune on the trailer and the health inspections, and the stock, and the lot rental, etc. Why spend all that money just to get shut down by the city because they didn't get their cut?

Yah. Lets cut that nose off. The face wasn't that pretty anyways. Legally sanctioned thuggery and racketeering really isn't that attractive...roll eyes

RE: AMERICA IS GREAT.

I think the innovative spirit of the American citizen should be encouraged. If Obama really wanted to create jobs that matter, he'd stop catering to corporate and labor interests, and start cultivating our entrepreneurial community. Small business is where real growth always occurs. Catering to oligarchy is doomed from the start. New markets are suppressed by oligarchy, and stagnation is inevitable.

As always, JMHO. cool

Parity is where its at. A worm-hole is, in effect a door. Using tachyonic non-local pairing, we can, in fact, theoretically, as your little ditty implies, by travelling FTL, in fact, travel through time. Warping space to travel instantaneously must, as relativistic relationships dictate, warp time as well. The exact implications I will have to study in terms of the math for a bit. It's a 3-body problem so it may take me a few lifetimes, but I'll get back to you. tip hat

I'm wondering what you meant by all life on earth, as there is a definite distinction between prokaryotic life and eukaryotic life, and mammalian life is thus different from plant life, etc. As such, although the DNA in a tree might share similiar strings with lupine examples, their other distinctions lead one to conclude that their evolutionary paths are quite different.

How life started was moot once it did start. As measurement began to unfold more and more quantum potential into matrices of matter and energy, classical mechanics began to dominate. Death became the enemy of life, and it began to organize at a faster rate to counter entropy.

Entropy is the function of a square, meaning *delta* s squared, or the change in entropy per unit time, always geometric, as in acceleration. Thus, replication of life became the function of a square, and we have Malthus, and dynamic equilibrium in every plant and animal population except humans.

Very possible. Carl Sagan postulated entities in the clouds of Jupiter that have very little to do with what we conceive of as life but might still be sentient. Alien means alien. If we could imagine it, then its not alien, really. Humanity insists on personification and anthropocentric values for all aspects of first contact.

First contact may in fact be when we contract our visitors as a plague. Who knows?

Let me clarify this statement a little. Thermodynamics is the root of Hoyle's junkyard 747 fallacy. In classical thermodynamics, entropy is part of the second law, meaning there is always some loss of energy in any transformation due to sheer randomness (entropy is defined as the a tendency toward randomness). Thus, nature tends toward decay, as everything loses energy. Humanity has yet to create life from a primordial soup because of this.

But the problem is the very act of observation. Classical mechanics remain collapsed into classical behaviors, including the laws of entropy. In the beginning, there was no such observer, and everything was quantum. Out of this life began. Boom! Entrance stage right. And "God" said, "Let there be measurement."

And that's when all the trouble started.

Science: Theory & Fact - 50+ New "Habitable" Planets?

This is my point exactly Frank. Thank you for your comment.

This sort of tech will come as a combination of several disciplines, but will ultimately be based on Bohm's holographic model of reality. What can only be imagined today, in its most rudimentary sense, will come about as part of the snowball effect learning curve of science and industry. The more we know, the faster we learn, and the more theory we can apply in engineering to prove the current hypotheses.

Science: Theory & Fact - 50+ New "Habitable" Planets?

I'm not sure such galactic seeding is necessary really, OD. Scientists have already debunked Hoyle's fallacy, so life (in terms of ordering and self-replication contrary to the laws of entropy) may have generated from primordial soup nearly instantaneously, because of the tricks quantum uncertainty can play with the Three Laws. Hoyle's fallacy only applies to classical mechanics, and must be set aside when dealing with the looking-glass world of the quantum.

Vacuum is the natural state of outer-space. At some point, the electromagnetic properties of exotic metals will be employed to create negative vacuum energy (possibly with the use of superconductive and nanotech as well), which will introduce an unquantifiable uncertainty across the whole field. Such non-local effects have enormous potential for traversible wormholes.

But, again, this theoretical tech requires a target. It will require enormous amounts of energy, and the Laws of Thermodynamics make this expenditure of energy extremely wasteful if we don't have a definite and pre-determined target.

RE: Most promisses of Obama are kept WHEN and IF possible! Support him keeping all of his promisses!

The world is perfect. It's people who have the problem. They refuse to live in that world and choose the fantasy that is their own little happy place. Unfortunately, that solipsism is what has killed this nation. The "Me" is getting the the check, and there will be no more dine and dash until the dishes are done.

RE: Most promisses of Obama are kept WHEN and IF possible! Support him keeping all of his promisses!

Easy answers to hard questions don't exist.

-All the sound-bytes in the world are not going to save this country. "Yes, We Can!" and "Contract With America" begs the question "How". We need solutions, not pretty pictures. The solutions will be complex, but the presentation doesn't have to be. The only reason politicians make their presentation of legislation complex is to hide the earmarks and hidden agendas. Straight-forward legislation stands on simple common-sense language or its legalese window-dressing disguising livestock manure.

-All the rhetoric in the world is not going to balance the budget. Rolling up our sleeves and working together to make sensible cuts doesn't happen unless people stop talking and start working. "You lie!" and "Dissent is disloyalty" are counter-productive. So are extremist positions. "No!" and "You lost, we won!" smugness needs to disappear.

-All the Wall Street/Labor Union special interest money in the world is not going to stop people that are aware from pressing the Main Street agenda until changes are made. And more and more people are becoming aware and disgusted, and are moving toward action to make changes that make sense, not changes for changes' sake.

It's interesting to note the concept of possibly using the Casimir effect in space to produce a region of quantum uncertainty large enough to produce a wormhole. While strictly theoretical at this point, as we expand out into our own solar system this might not be as far-fetched as people might think.

Food for thought anyway. Its' the incorrigible sci-fi writer in me that makes me think of things like this in hard-scientific ways. Sci-fi of today is often sci-fact of tomorrow. confused grin

Science: Theory & Fact - 50+ New "Habitable" Planets?

Negative mass would possess some strange properties, such as accelerating in the direction opposite of applied force. For example, an object with negative inertial mass and positive electric charge would accelerate away from objects with negative charge, and towards objects with positive charge, the opposite of the normal rule that like charges repel and opposite charges attract. This behaviour can produce bizarre results: for instance, a gas containing a mixture of positive and negative matter particles will have the positive matter portion increase in temperature without bound. However, the negative matter portion gains negative temperature at the same rate, again balancing out.

Despite being completely inconsistent with a common-sense approach and the expected behavior of "normal" matter, negative mass is completely mathematically consistent and introduces no violation of conservation of momentum or energy. It is used in certain speculative theories, such as on the construction of wormholes. The closest known real representative of such exotic matter is the region of pseudo-negative pressure density produced by the Casimir effect. - Wiki

Quite right RD. Thanks for commenting. cheers

I think FTL travel is, in fact, possible. At current theoretical levels, wormhole technology is possible, if currently improbable. What's critical at this point is if our observations of "habitable zone" planets are even viable. Do these planets even exist, and if they do, how can we be sure enough to invest ourselves in travel to them? confused
