What punishment do you think is appropriate for you using the discriminatry rhetoric 'rednecks' in public, Ro...?
Here we have a dilema: I agree with you that it's about time it stopped, but how do we tackle the subtleties of intent?
I imagine now I've pointed out the 'redneck' thing, you'll be all like whoopsie daisy, I didn't mean it like that, but others resent me fairly relentlessly pointing out discriminatory behaviours, or even reserve the right to act in 'hateful', discrimnatory, abusive ways.
Maybe 'hate crime' is an inappropriate term, but recognising that discrimination is a violation, a form of violence in itself which may cumulatively and collectively lead to some acts of physical violence is worth challenging in a definitive way.
How that challenge is followed through given most people's lack of awareness is another issue. We can all make mistakes which no one should be hung, drawn and quartered for, but how do you banish it without there being consequences?
Social pressure is taking an awfully long time and in the meantime lots of people are having their lives shaped by discrimination and are even dying.
I read, or heard somethng about inner city violence in the US which suggested the reason why there are cultures of black men killing other black men is because of a justified belief that they can get away with it, or get away with it more, than killing a white man. When so little value is placed upon some people's because of their race, their gender, or their 'difference' in some other way it creates their vulnerability.
If we tackled the creation of vulnerability and crimes against those who are perceived as being vulnerable enough to be a target, it might put the cat amongst the pigeons.
I learned the hard way, unpicking old clothes, grovelling around on the floor with baking paper, knees covered in tailor's chalk and a lot of trial and error.
Mind, that's how they teach in at least one top London university.
I like hand driven, cast iron sewing machines, but I gave my collection to a religious organsation when I moved. They recondition them and export them to Africa enabling women to set up their own businesses.
That's how I started my tailoring business.
My treddle machine needs a bit of renovation. I'm nt sure when I'm going to get round to that, mind.
I didn't at any point say having a misogynist opinion that you keep to yourself is a hate crime, but that action resulting from that opinion can, or should be.
How about if it's expressed in public, like here on CS?
There are times where it's so pervasive, I have to walk away because I can't be done with listening it to anymore, but why should I be the one to change my behaviour?
There is a reason why there is now a lack of diversity amongst blog and forum contributors. You and I were both contributors when that wasn't the case.
If I stab someone to death for being black because I hate Black people, or spray paint, "Paki's go home" because I hate Pakistani people, but I don't incite anyone else to hate Black, or Pakistani people, it's not a hate crime?
Surely what your saying is that it can't be a hate crime unless someone acts in a misogynistic manner, rather than has misogynistic thoughts.
I imagine a lot of people have experienced real hell, but that doesn't mean other people aren't going through real hell when your young, lovely postie snuffs it from covid leaving a wife and child.
Covid isn't always bad, but it's bad enough that taking no action at all would likely have led to a humanitarian disaster of epic proprtions. Lockdown isn't ideal, but bodies piling up in the street being eaten by rats isn't either.
Likewise, people aren't wholly bad if they do naff things, but if in ignoring/accepting the naff things we promote a humanitarian disaster, like wearing a mask and washing our hands, it's an insignificant effort.
Maybe your doctor doesn't like giving away his tranx if he has patients like you.
On a serious note, maybe the tests are to check you haven't got some kind of sleep apnea. Insomnia and frequent waking might be keeping you alive.
I've stopped taking the immuno-suppressants I was prescribed because the side effects were scary and driving me bonkers. If I did sleep I'd wake up every 20 minutes feeling like I was holding my breath.
Now I'm insomniac because I'm in constant, excrutiating pain, but when I do sleep I seem to be able to do that breathing thing without having to concentrate.
