Spot on. If people are against EU membership they should say so...but telling lies to sabotage the running of the Union is not on. Ireland gained a lot from previous EU treaties and on this occasion we have the opportunity to help others....it would be nice to think we saw it as our responsibility
But that's the point...it isn't the devil you know when you vote know...it is the opposite. And "no" doesn't mean no change it just means less efficient change.
Also....as of the most recent poll....there is a hefty "yes" majority in the country whatever about in CS.
We disagree on a lot about Lisbon but I respect your views. I am pleased to see the "if you are pro eu vote yes" line because I actually think that is one of the fundamental issues. You are perfectly entitled to be anti-EU but some of the No proponents won't admit that they are. They pretend there is some kind of better deal available....there isn't. Joining the EU DID give away certain things but my view would be that it was, viewed in the whole, a very beneficial deal for us.
We'll have to disagree on that - we live in a representative democracy. I also think we didnt really need a constitutional referendum. As for the not reading it.....that is a distortion of what was said....not everyone reads every line of everything and that doesnt mean they dont know what they are talking about.
Cowen mightn't be my cup of tea but I wouldn't doubt his grip on the detail of policy!
It is a view about referenda more than about Lisbon. I think we elect TDs and a Government to govern and to represent the country abroad. If we don't like what they do then we vote them out. Single issue referenda are a cumbersome enough way of dealing with issues...but Lisbon is an example of a proposal that (like it or hate it) is a series of interlocking things and difficult to explain in the simplicities of a campaign. Lots of "yes" and particularly "no" voters voted in ignorance. Also a lot of lies were told the last time and the rest of Europe paid the price for Irish voters who couldnt be bothered to inform themselves of the issues and who may in some cases have been using the occasion to kick the local Government.
That is a dream. There is no way the US would have done any such thing. Bottom line in international afairs the Brits have some clout and we have little.

I prefer elected thieves to unelected thieves on the whole!
