Barcelona is a great city....one of my favourites.Notice I say CITY. Hiring a car would be a waste of time,money and energy (both you and the fuel!)
The metro is superb also buses and local trains.
Maybe hire a car for one day only to visit Montserrat. I toured Europe for three years constantly in my last camper car and that is one place I returned to a few times.Extraordinary.
But then there are buses to there and you can have a loooong Spanish lunch and delegate the driving to someone else!
