I don't think you can ever have too many friends. and the fact that you may never see them becomes rather moot. Just to hear from them and learn a little bit about how they live should improve each of their lives.
There are too many lonely people in this world, and to criticize someone who wants to have other people to talk to here, when that conversation might be the bright point of their day, well.........
