Healthy non materialistic attitued or fear of commitment?

Having Monty this past week and realizing how much I enjoy the companionship has made me look at my life a bit closer. As I said to Dave in my response... my belongings fit into a couple of suitcases... I guess to me the responsibility of owning a dog automatically involves a bit more materialism... as in having your own furniture, being more settled into a life, starting to accumulate stuff... just in general not having quite the same freedom to leave at any given moment.

Healthy non materialistic attitued or fear of commitment?

I guess I should have stated a bit more about my lifestyle... I rent furnished apartments, so I don´t own any furniture, I don´t own a car, I don´t collect stuff... what I own fits in a couple of suitcases...

In answer to your post...the selfishness you mention, the inconvenience of having to stop to take care of something... do you think that this carries over into how you would feel about a potential partner?

Healthy non materialistic attitued or fear of commitment?

Last week a friend dropped his dog off for me to take care of... a beautiful Black Lab by the name of Monty.

What can I say... I´m smitten! He´s laying here now, half on the couch, half on my lap lightly snoring in a most adorable fashion. I put his blanket on my bed at night and he sleeps next to me... in the mornings we wake up and wrestle around for a while and groan at each other.

I´m enjoying long walks on the beach everyday as I have company to do it with, going into town for a coffee is just a bit more enjoyable with him laying curled at my feet.

For the past few years I´ve avoided getting a dog because my life doesn´t seem stable enough to give one a secure life...

But maybe... making the decision to have a dog is actually a step that will insure I have a more stable lifestyle. Perhaps this attitude of keeping things in my life "minimalistic" is just a way of insuring that I can "drop and go" at any given time, rather than the freedom from materialism that I claim....

So... my question to you..."Is a life that rejects materialism, really just a way of avoiding commitment in life?"

RE: Parents should not stick together for the rest of their life!

laugh laugh I don´t know why anyone wastes the time answering this OP´s posts seriously!!laugh wine

RE: Parents should not stick together for the rest of their life!

Absolutely... I´ve been happily divorced for 25 years and firmly believe that a woman is entitled to an upgrade at least once a year. I mean with all the new younger models becoming available each year why would a woman stick with a worn out model?

Better yet, now you can just do a few test drives and take out a short term lease on the model of your choice....grin

RE: Food to share . . . . any good recipes out there?

My favorite way to cook a turkey

Quarter a lemon and an onion and about 10 sage leaves and stuff inside the cavity of the Turkey.

Then mix up butter and minced sage and massage it under the skin of the turkey as well as all over it and salt inside and out.

Roast in the oven at 350 degrees for about 3 1/2 hours for 13 to 18 pounds 4 hours up to 22 pounds

I start the turkey with the breast side down for the first hour and a half... this allows the juices to catch in the breast meat and stops the breast from burning. After the first hour and a half turn the Turkey breast side up and continue cooking.

Make sure you use a roasting pan to catch all the juices to make lovely homemade gravy.

RE: Christmas

When my daughter was young... it was Christmas morning, I loved making it look like Santa had been... a dusty bootprint on the hearth, crumbs and an empty glass and just a bit of the green from the carrot top left on the plate... the look of delight as she ran from place to place finding the signs that Santa had been...

Living in Spain now, my favorite time is the night of Kings on Jan. 6th. I live in a small village and the kings (3 wise men) arrive by boat where they enter carriages that are waiting for them, they disperse candy to all the kids that are there and then the parade starts, winding it´s way through town. In the town square there is a huge tent with a stage and each child that lives in or around the town is given a gift by one of the kings, songs are sung and and fortified wine, cava and oysters are served, whole families wander around the square and stop in the cafes saying hello to old friends and meeting new... It´s a lovely night.

RE: What Are Your Christmas Plans ?

You all are welcome to catch a flight to Ibiza... I can´t believe the amount of food... I´ve had to put some stuff in a cooler out on the back porch cause the fridge is full...

The soup is made, the mussels prepared and just need 5 min under the broiler, the prawns have been peeled and deveined and are marinating in olive oil and garlic. That´s the starters sorted.

The turkey has been massaged with butter and sage, the crown roast has a dry spice rub on it, the stuffing is made and just has to be baked tomorrow, the veg is cleaned cut and ready to go... tinned cranberry again, I can´t get fresh ones here...sigh and the mince tarts, brownies and chocolate chip cookies are finished and one of the boys is bringing a Christmas pudding his mum sent, so I´ll whip up some custard to go with it tomorrow.

The boys set up the TV´s with the playstation and xbox, have a couple cases of beer and a couple cases of wine...

I made a breakfast casserole so when they show up in the morning, I´ll just pop that in the oven... I think I´m ready...laugh

RE: What is a perfect man for women?

Boy are you messed up in your perceptions of men, women and relationships. I think it´s wonderful when a man is secure enough in himself to take pride in his SO´s accomplishments.

I have no interest in a man who puts me on a pedestal... but I do like a man who is an active partner in our life and is willing to share the responsibilities as well as the laughter and fun.

RE: I got laid last night!!!

laugh laugh Well you certainly got my attention!!!

RE: Randomly Post The First Thing That Pops Into Your Head Thread

On what planet did I think it was a good idea to have Christmas Day with 7 lads?doh laugh 3 of them took me shopping today and it was like being with 3 little brothers... racing up the aisle with the cart... "oh let´s get this... and this", I could open a bar with the amount of alcohol they bought.

I´ve got the mince tarts baked as well as chocolate chip cookies and brownies. I´ve axed the idea of 2 of them sleeping over Christmas Eve and instead have told them to go and get drunk, they can come over for breakfast about 11 Christmas day... they might be a bit more manageable hung over...laugh

Oh well... I wanted a family style Christmas....laugh uh oh help

RE: would you snog the one above you
