Usually, a coma does not last more than a few weeks. Sometimes, however, a person stays in a coma for a long time — even years — and will be able to do very little except breathe on his or her own. Most people do come out of comas. Some of them are able to return to the normal lives they had before they got sick.
It seems the case you cited was dealt with compassionately, i cannot give an opinion on other cases not being in possesion of the facts and circumstances involved.
Personally I am not in fav,our of giving carte blanch to this action without many safeguards, but i have heard of doctors increasing the pain control dosage, to the the point for the pain control is fatal.
From my own point of view , my doctor asked me to sign a DNR form even though i have no illness, he said it's just a formality, I told him t stuff his formality, and changed doctors.
