In the final battle with the alQeada of Iraq, 2000 surrendered near Mosul after a week of siege. If someone needed a UN Peace Keeper at the end it was alQeada of Iraq. They did not call for them.

The matra is not reaching Damascus. Nor is Assad going into the dust bin of history without a fight. With 10,000 tanks & personnel carriers, 600 combat aircraft, 300 helos...60 of them HINDs and another 60 Gazelles. Assad is well prepared for a fight. Russia has put a lot of money and weapons into Syria.
So this really is a old cold war stuff. Proxie war fighting. Here Putin has played Obama for a amateur. He built up the Syrian military during the last four years of the Obama administration, while Obama had a announced withdrawal from Iraq and reduced the US military presence there. UN just announced it is suspending the UN Patrol in Syria. That the level of violence has risen in the country to the point, were it is "posing a significant risk" to the UN Peace Keepers.

He has to cover why wages are falling. Why inflation is growing. Are we heading into a Jimmy Carter....stagnation?

In the USA and NATO conflict in the country, respectively 1827 and 1031 causalties have been taken by the two militaries. Compared to the historical Army loses in other wars, this is very modest.
Consider in one battle of World War 11, the United States lost 65,000 in the Battle of the Bulge. In the entire VetNam war, the United States lost 58,000 in the ten years of war.
The simple fact is, that in one month of recruiting. The United States military recruits more soldiers, marines, airmen to the service than has been lost in the entire 10 years of the conflict. It also retains monthly more soldiers, marines, and airmen that have been lost in the 10 years of war.
So unless the Taliban can change the violence level and speed of the conflict, both NATO and the United State will withdraw with militaries that are intact. Militaries with a great deal of combat experience in some of the world hardest terrain to fight in.
So I don't see a defeated military here. Perhaps a tired one. But soon as they come home for a time....and reequipped and retrained....ready for deployment again. If need be.

The Syrian military is is about 650,000 in total. With about 300,000 active duty and the balance reservists. Of the 650,000.....72% of them are Alawite. Alawite make up only 12% of the Syrian population. So what Assad has made with his military, just like Sadam Hussien made with his. Is a defense force for his ethnic tribe.

Military common sense was totally ignored in this strike. You don't kill 17 to get one bad guy. If you cannot get him with a troop deployment, unless it very strange circumstance......you don't kill 17 innocent people....he goes free. You find him another day.
General Allen was stand up man in this. He met alone with the families of the victims in packed room to offer his condolences. But he should not have had to be there. Unless somewhere in the upper command structure a very big flaw in decision making took place.
From day one....we have had a President that is micro managing the war effort. He was in the situation room during the bin Laden raid. He can be, with today's technologies, in the cockpit of the plane that drops a smart bomb or in the control room of a drone.....speaking directly with the pilot. The families of the 17 that lost relatives in this strike....should get compensation from the US government for the strike. But my recommendation is....they file a lawsuit against President Obama. For wrongful death...or worse.
