Yeah as Lagoona says they make their money on the so-called consumables - the price competition on the printers themselves is fierce. I worked for a Japanese mfr. of among other things printers. I have a laser printer from them with lotsa toner, fortunately for me. And it's true they go to great lengths to make it hard for customers to use no name ink. They change the shape of the cartidges etc. etc. as well as the electronic measures Lagoona mentioned. Depending on how far you want to go, there's a German instruction on the net somewhere, how to attach a biggish bottle of black ink to one of the cheapest Lexmark printers in existence. Basically you connect a thin tube to a hole bored in the cartridge and the tube follows the print head but the bottle (upended) is static. Not pretty maybe but very cheap!
Have you met the sick father and know it's for real?
IF you can afford it, say you will consider PAYING THE BILL, and say that naturally you would want first to discuss the options with the hospital/surgeon. Ask who the surgeon would be and give him a call. Do not give your dude any cash!
That means if it's genuine you'll have done the right thing. And if not, you'll have found out the truth. I suspect the latter, but you ever know.
My nearest neighbour is about 150 yds away. He's a nice old geezer and he owns the donkey that is or maybe was - I can't remember if it's still there - on one of my profile pics. He used to steal from me but he got the message that I didn't like it so he's stopped doing that. I told him through an interpreter that I would rather give him some cash than find my favourite screwdriver gone, just when I needed it. This is an admirable arrangement. He's a bit hard of hearing and when I didn't understand a word of what he was saying he would repeat it at double the volume, thinking that he was talking too quietly. Recently I've been downloading music from YouTube, mostly Italian oldies by Domenico Modugno like Volare and Ciao Ciao Bambino, and playing these over and over (and singing along) as loud as I can to see if anyone complains, but so far no reaction of any sort. In the other direction is the village cemetery and I haven't heard anything from them either.
My point is the info she's given is sketchy and also doesn't make much sense. No Windows yet error messages ? If she has a Powerpoint Presentation ending as far as I remember .ppt the association with PowerPoint will be automatic. This tells me PP isn't on her computer any more, though the blahblah#1.ppt blahblah#2.ppt files etc. are. That's why she needs to provide more info and/or get help locally.
Yeah that happened to me in Holland and in Sweden too! Once I was in Copenhagen and took the ferry over to Malmo and thought I'd get on better in German. No way! They professed not to understand, so I quickly got the message.
I've been to Holland many times (OK I know its proper name is The Netherlands but I found that so many Dutch people themselves talked about their country as Holland, so I stopped being careful about that. Previously I had been very careful in that regard as I hate it when people refer to Scotland as if it were somehow a part of England). Anyway I've been there many many times and I love the country and the Dutch people. They are so resourceful and have a high standard of living through brains and effort, having no natural resources except for some North Sea gas and oil. They almost all speak fluent English, better than some English people I've met over the years!!
Last time I was in Amsterdam the tram conductress and I had a conversation. I'll never forget how effortless and fluent her command of English was, and she was charming and good-looking as well. Another time I had a chat with a traffic warden about the best place to park the van. Same thing. Friendly, intelligent, fluent English. Amazing. And I bet they speak German as well.
Allergies are so weird. Is that our modern living or what? I seem to be immune to illness touch wood! A mean veggie stir fry eh? Must try that. Wine with dinner, yep I can do do that.
OK I don't want to get into the pros and cons of Norton McAfee Kapersky and Co. because that debate has raged back and forth over the years and each has its adherents and slaggers and so on. I personally use Kapersky, it updates the virus signatures every time I power up my PCs and I haven't had major problems for years. I also run Spybot Search and Destroy and other adware cleaners once in a while. I also have a backup strategy which means I have Ghost images (Norton Ghost aka Symantec) on another drive which means I can restore my operating system to the state I had the last time I made the images. When I suspect a virus I also use the internet anti-virus that I recently recommended here (www.housecall.trendmicro.com) But I also have a Linux operating system on one computer with a dual-boot menu when I boot up. This means I can select Linus or Windows as the OS. I select Linux when I'm going to download stuff which is likely to contain viruses or visit dodgy sites. The viruses are small software programmes written by nasty guys that will run on your computer and do things you don't want and probably you're unaware of. They can also be memory hogs and slow down your PC. The viruses are written for the Windows OS and won't run on Linux. They also won't run on Macs (though there are apparently one or two viruses written for Macs nowadays) so when buying a new laptop it's not a bad idea to consider a Mac. 2 of my 3 daughters and my ex have Macs and guess what, no viruses. Also the Mac operating system can now be installed on non-Macintosh computers, using workarounds that Macintosh is trying to ban. Hope this helps someone.
So you see there's an upside to everything. I'm putting on the pounds but I would hate to change my lifestyle. I hear a lot about allergies but have never suffered from anything like that. Well anyway I sympathise with you and hope you have plenty of choice of good things that you can eat!
Well I truly hate to prolong your anguish by continuing this but mediterranean food with pasta in various forms makes up a major part of my food intake. I can hardly imagine doing without that. I would experiment with various substitutes till I found something acceptable. My meat sauce is so scrumptious it would probably disguise the fact that the pasta was a substitute. However it contains a LOT of garlic.
