RE: Is Dogpile a better search engine than Google?

DuckDuckGo.com is my favorite search engine. They claim to not track searches, nor collect information. Here’s a search for “Ensay Victoria” (nice place, Rob!) Zero tracking info.

Here’s a search for “Ensay Victoria” in DogPile. Almost identical results. Not much tracking info.

And here it is again, in Google. Almost identical results. It looks like they wrote a novel about me and my search!

RE: My son wants 2 b a carpenter when he leaves school....

I've lived in the Houston, TX area for over 35 years, never once had a problem with tornadoes. I don’t know anybody who’s house was severely damaged by a tornado. Oh, they do happen, but not a "huge amount" of them.

Even five hundred miles north of here in “Tornado Alley.” You’ll find lots of underground storm cellars up there, but still mostly wood framed houses.

I think if your house had a direct hit from a tornado it would be demolished - brick or wood.

Now, I have been thru a half-dozen hurricanes - sustained 125 mph winds and all. One apartment I was living in had a 6 sqft hole torn in its roof, another house lost a few shingles. No damage to any wooden frames.

Gulf of Mexico beach houses here (that are hit the hardest by a hurricane) are all wood frames. Their main concern is high water, so they are built on 10' tall stilts (which exposes the house to a lot more wind.)

Wood framed houses aren’t all that weak, there is a complex, interlaced system of bracing them, tying them together.

So I guess the answer to your question would be that the (lack of) need for the extra bit of security that brick brings doesn’t justify the additional cost.

Like buying insurance for getting hit by lightning.

RE: My son wants 2 b a carpenter when he leaves school....

I went into carpentry right after graduating high school, built houses for 15 years. Then I went back to school, earned a BS Mechanical Engineering in 1990. The best of both worlds, IMHO.
