That's partially true. However, people seem just as keen to argue about social and anthropological issues as well. There's also plenty of arguments rooted in personal dislike. Jealousy, ignorance, and just not liking someone causes friction on threads.
The problem with chat threads is that they often turn into argument threads. It happens on even the most neutral and well intentioned chat threads People can post in word games and not be called an idiot for having a different opinion on something.
