First off, people who study the paranormal think that those who see, or hear, or sense ghosts, or other entities do so because they are "sensitives," or people with psi abilities, even if they don't know it. But, as if often the case, it's a hereitary trait, particulary along the female side of the family.
The lucky ones run into others, who have learned to control those abilities and defend themselves.
Similarly, those who have homes with Poltergeists (German: for "noisy ghosts") with doors opening and closing are haunting themselves. Often, it's a pubescent female in the house who has psychkinetic abilities (can move things, like Uri Geller, with their minds), but they don't know that they have this ability, and of course, don't know how to control it.
The remedy is to make whomever has the psi ability realize it, reduce their stress, and teach them how to control it.
