Anytime, kiddo! I make a GREAT tour guide!! Lol!! Scotland is on my list of places to see. Egypt is next, tho, so its going to be a bit. That and I'm looking into the possibility of acquiring a place in Crete with a buddy of mine from England.
Why do I love my country?? Because I can own a gun!! Sorry, Tam; couldn't resist throwing that in!!
Can't speak for all of the states because of the size and diversity. My part of Illinois is pretty special I think. My city is nestled in a little river valley with lots of turn of the century buildings that have been lovingly restored and done up in "painted lady" schemes. Add thousands of mature maple trees with bike trails along the river and you can get a little bit of an idea what its like. Weather wise, we pretty much have it all. From 100 degree summer days to 25 below zero in frosty January. Fall is special with the changing leaves turning Elgin into a fairy tale city decked out in all its finery. The people here are about as diverse as you can get - both culturally and ethnically. It makes for a dining experience that is equally diverse! Literally anything your heart desires is only a hop skip and a jump away. For entertainment, Chicago is 40 minutes by car with all that a big city has to offer including all the lakefront activities on Lake Michigan. Within 5/10 minutes of my home I can find live entertainment on any given weekend and the college in Elgin puts on many other cultural events year long. If you want seclusion or the great outdoors, Wisconsin is an hour by car. Great fishing, camping, hiking, ect., ect..
Have to agree with Somechick. People who try to drive and talk on the cell drive me absolutely crazy! Not to mention the fact that they're a REAL hazzard on the road!
Hiya Jenny! This sounds more like the Jenny we all know. Go with the flow and just enjoy every day. Only way to be and somewhere/sometime it'll come knocking on your door when you least expect it. No blame, for anyone, just enjoy the endless possibilities. You go girl!!
Lol! I don't stay away; just haven't posted much. Usually on at least once a day reading the forums - late at night as work has picked up some. Life is good! Been going out a lot, plays, dinner, movies, ect.. Having fun and enjoying every single minute!! Really nice seeing you again too! Have missed the word play! Lol!
Doing extremely well here! Glad everything is fine your way. I've been around but mostly in the background. Lots of polls/controversy that I TRY to stay out of. Its either that or get banned! Lol! I DEFINITELY have opinions!
Hiya Lago, Tam! Nope. Don't think we will extinguish ourselves, put then I'm an optimist! lol! More likely a natural event like our sun going supernova or the earth getting hit by an asteroid. We seem to have just enough smarts to pull away from the brink as has been done a few times. Doesn't mean we're not going to have to face a few tough decisions, tho. Jmo.
Hi ya Petal. Not really sure exactly why you quoted me here. Everything I've written has been based on my personal experience, naturally, and people I have met here and abroad. Could you clarify please? Thanks!
Sad but true about leaving the states. Same applies to citizens of the U.S. and learning other languages. The U.S. is SOOO big and our entire continent basically speaks english (yes, most of mexico speaks english as well as spanish) We've never had a REASON to learn other languages unlike the people of europe who need to speak other languages fluently for business, travel, ect.. That has to change as the world keeps getting smaller and smaller. Great discussion! Thanks!
Guess it's all in how you look at it. I completely agree about arms sales - illegal or otherwise. Big business and hard to stop but needs to be curtailed if the world is ever to find peace. As for trying to police the world and force our opinions on it? Strictly the province of the politicians! Ask the average american if we're brothers/sisters to the rest of the world and the answer would invariably be "YES!" Do we have an overblown opinion of ourselves? Lol! Have to truthfully answer yes - probably more so than any other country. Could go on and on about mistakes I think my government has made but in the end, its still my government. Made my opinion known in the last election. However, I've traveled extensively to quite a bit of the world and as yet, none have a higher standard of living then the united states. I think a whole lot of the people in my country don't realize how our standard of living compares to much of the world. Think they tend to judge actions based on how we live here instead of seeing it in the larger context of the world. Discussions/forums like these help immensely. Okay, stole enough of this thread - back to topic! Sorry OP.
Hi Tam! Didn't say rights are always upheld. What I said was that the basis of the United States from its inception was that the rights of the individual was paramont! More and more and more those rights are being impinged upon. Your example above is point of fact. Instead of being accepted at face value, now its "how do we interpret this to get the result that WE want." As long as I don't infringe on another persons right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" I should be able to persue anything I would like. I expect the same in kind and would argue against ANYTHING that attempts to limit my options!
New voice to the thread. Some interesting points/arguements presented. Makes for interesting reading. In a different perspective, why do you need convincing that it is the RIGHT of the people to own guns? You are entitled to believe how you wish. However, gun laws/regulations by nature will take away the rights or wishes of other individuals. If I want to own a gun, who has the right to say no to that? This country has ALWAYS been about the rights of the individual and it seems as if more and more attempts at curtailing those rights are occurring on an almost daily basis.
Sorry to disagree, but in McHenry county, Illinois (not a large county) usual and customary wage is $54.00 and change per hour for a union carpenter. Does the carpenter actually see that? Hell no, the union eats up about $20 to $25 of that in pension, benefits, ect. But the actual customer is still paying the full load!
RE: Which is the absolutely essential food/ingredient in your kitchen?
Throw in a little Greek Feta and Buffalo Motz and you can make just about ANYTHING!!
