Bush launches last-minute deregulation push

Burst of activity
In some cases, Bush's regulations reflect new interpretations of language in federal laws. In other cases, such as several new counterterrorism initiatives, they reflect new executive branch decisions in areas where Congress — now out of session and focused on the elections — left the president considerable discretion.

The burst of activity has made this a busy period for lobbyists who fear that industry views will hold less sway after the elections. The doors at the New Executive Office Building have been whirling with corporate officials and advisers pleading for relief or, in many cases, for hastened decision making.

According to the Office of Management and Budget's regulatory calendar, the commercial scallop-fishing industry came in two weeks ago to urge that proposed catch limits be eased, nearly bumping into National Mining Association officials making the case for easing rules meant to keep coal slurry waste out of Appalachian streams. A few days earlier, lawyers for kidney dialysis and biotechnology companies registered their complaints at the OMB about new Medicare reimbursement rules. Lobbyists for customs brokers complained about proposed counterterrorism rules that require the advance reporting of shipping data.

Bush's aides are acutely aware of the political risks of completing their regulatory work too late. On the afternoon of Bush's inauguration, Jan. 20, 2001, his chief of staff issued a government-wide memo that blocked the completion or implementation of regulations drafted in the waning days of the Clinton administration that had not yet taken legal effect.

"Through the end of the Clinton administration, we were working like crazy to get as many regulations out as possible," said Donald R. Arbuckle, who retired in 2006 after 25 years as an OMB official. "Then on Sunday, the day after the inauguration, OMB Director Mitch Daniels called me in and said, 'Let's pull back as many of these as we can.' "

Clinton's appointees wound up paying a heavy price for procrastination. Bush's team was able to withdraw 254 regulations that covered such matters as drug and airline safety, immigration and indoor air pollutants. After further review, many of the proposals were modified to reflect Republican policy ideals or scrapped altogether.

Seeking to avoid falling victim to such partisan tactics, White House Chief of Staff Joshua B. Bolten in May imposed a Nov. 1 government-wide deadline to finish major new regulations, "except in extraordinary circumstances."

That gives officials just a few more weeks to meet an effective Nov. 20 deadline for the publication of economically significant rules, which take legal effect only after a 60-day congressional comment period. Less important rules take effect after a 30-day period, creating a second deadline of Dec. 20.

White House moves to relax many rules covering private industry

By R. Jeffrey Smith

Washington Post
updated 4:17 a.m. ET, Fri., Oct. 31, 2008

The White House is working to enact a wide array of federal regulations, many of which would weaken government rules aimed at protecting consumers and the environment, before President Bush leaves office in January.

The new rules would be among the most controversial deregulatory steps of the Bush era and could be difficult for his successor to undo. Some would ease or lift constraints on private industry, including power plants, mines and farms.

Those and other regulations would help clear obstacles to some commercial ocean-fishing activities, ease controls on emissions of pollutants that contribute to global warming, relax drinking-water standards and lift a key restriction on mountaintop coal mining.
Once such rules take effect, they typically can be undone only through a laborious new regulatory proceeding, including lengthy periods of public comment, drafting and mandated reanalysis.

'Last-minute assault'
"They want these rules to continue to have an impact long after they leave office," said Matthew Madia, a regulatory expert at OMB Watch, a nonprofit group critical of what it calls the Bush administration's penchant for deregulating in areas where industry wants more freedom. He called the coming deluge "a last-minute assault on the public . . . happening on multiple fronts."

White House spokesman Tony Fratto said: "This administration has taken extraordinary measures to avoid rushing regulations at the end of the term. And yes, we'd prefer our regulations stand for a very long time — they're well reasoned and are being considered with the best interests of the nation in mind."

As many as 90 new regulations are in the works, and at least nine of them are considered "economically significant" because they impose costs or promote societal benefits that exceed $100 million annually. They include new rules governing employees who take family- and medical-related leaves, new standards for preventing or containing oil spills, and a simplified process for settling real estate transactions.

While it remains unclear how much the administration will be able to accomplish in the coming weeks, the last-minute rush appears to involve fewer regulations than Bush's predecessor, Bill Clinton, approved at the end of his tenure.

McCain and Nazi Collaborators

McCain tied to U.S. Council for World Freedom: Nazi collaborators and death squads in Central America.

As Sean Hannity, Rick Davis and John McCain step up their personal attacks on Barack Obama, a funny thing happened on the way to the smear fest. It seems John McCain has some prior associations he would rather not have revealed. I mean real ones. Check out this group.

GOP presidential nominee John McCain has past connections to a private group that supplied aid to guerrillas seeking to overthrow the leftist government of Nicaragua in the Iran-Contra affair.

The U.S. Council for World Freedom was part of an international organization linked to former Nazi collaborators and ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America. The group was dedicated to stamping out communism around the globe.

The council's founder, retired Army Maj. Gen. John Singlaub, said McCain became associated with the organization in the early 1980s as McCain was launching his political career in Arizona. Singlaub said McCain was a supporter but not an active member in the group.

Oh, my. Playing the Guilt by Association Game doesn't seem to be a good idea for McCain with friends like those.

Paul Begala tried to warn him on Meet the Press:

MR. BEGALA: Well, no. Obama was—he was asked about this in a debate in a primaries with Hillary Clinton sitting there; George Stephanopoulos of ABC asked him about it. He answered it. He pointed out that the despicable acts this guy committed were committed when, apparently, Barack Obama was eight years old. And, and I think Governor Palin here is making a strategic mistake. This guilt by association path is going to be trouble ultimately for the McCain campaign. You know, you can go back—I’ve written a book about McCain. I had a dozen researchers go through him. I didn’t even put this in the book. But John McCain sat on the board of a very right-wing organization. It was the U.S. Council for World Freedom. It was chaired by a guy named John Singlaub, who wound up involved in the Iran-Contra scandal. It was an ultraconservative right-wing group. The Anti-Defamation League, in 1981, when McCain was on the board, said this about this organization. It was affiliated with the World Anti-Communist League, the parent organization, which ADL said, “has increasingly become a gathering place, a forum, a point of contact for extremists, racists and Anti-Semites.” Now, that’s not John McCain. I don’t think he is that. But, but, you know, the problem is that a lot of people know John McCain’s record better than Governor Palin, and he does not want to play guilt by association or this thing could blow up in his face.

This excuse doesn't seem to fly either.

The McCain campaign, in a statement to Politico, defended the efforts of the council. Brian Rogers, a spokesman, said that the Senator "disassociated himself" from the group "when questions were raised about its activities, but that in no way diminishes his leadership role in ensuring that the forces of democracy and freedom prevailed in Central America."

But Singlaub "does not recall any McCain resignation in 1984 or May 1986," the Associated Press reported early Tuesday, "nor does Joyce Downey, who oversaw the group's day-to-day activities."

'Dirty tricks' escalate as US election nears

According to US law, labor unions and corporations are restricted on political donations to campaigns, in a bid to ward off corruption.

However, they can set up political action committees, funded by individuals, which have no fundraising limit and no obligation to state any facts.

"Campaign finance law doesn't concern itself with the veracity of the statements being made," said Paul Ryan, associate legal counsel at the Federal Election Commission.

"We have a First Amendment (to the Constitution) that protects the ability of individuals to speak freely in many, if not most, contexts with little or no restrictions on them."

So the attacks continue, some from left-wing groups like which has released ads questioning the health of 72-year-old McCain and warning that his administration would eliminate birth control for women.

Others, such as a "letter from the future" from the Christian group Focus on the Family, warn of an America in 2012 where "pornographic magazines are openly displayed."

And the latest, a new ad by the National Republican Trust PAC, hints that Obama would have granted a driver's license to September 11 hijacker Mohammed Atta.

The independent watchdog group called it "one of the sleaziest false TV ads of the campaign."

"It's not uncommon for the final weeks of the presidential campaign to bring out some of the most deceptive ads of the cycle," said's Joe Miller.

"If this gem ... is any indication, we'd best brace for a blizzard of balderdash."

'Dirty tricks' escalate as US election nears

Thursday October 30, 2008

In the final days of the US presidential election, campaign yard signs are being defaced, fliers advise Democrats to vote a day late, DVDs warning of Islam's clash with the West flood mailboxes, and allegations of fraud are flying.

In American politics, it's all part of the late-game frenzy, when what one side considers a dirty trick can be easily hailed by the other side as a pure exercise of the right to free speech.

For example, a phony flyer bearing the state of Virginia's logo has turned up, saying that "all Republican party supporters and independent voters supporting Republican candidates shall vote on November 4th as prescribed by law."

Those supporting Democrats in the battleground state "shall vote on November 5th," it said.

Similar fliers in Philadelphia warn that anyone with unpaid traffic tickets or outstanding arrest warrants could be jailed if they turn up at the polls on election day.

These types of "deceptive practices" commonly target minorities -- who this year overwhelmingly support Barack Obama -- and while most states prohibit making false statements regarding elections, the laws are difficult to enforce.

"It is an insidious form of vote suppression that often goes unaddressed by authorities, and the perpetrators are virtually never caught," said a report by the political watchdog group Common Cause.

Vandals in northern Virginia went on a brief escapade this month, pasting a letter "S" on yard signs so they read "Osama-Biden," in an attempt to link the Democrat and running mate Joe Biden to Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden.

Other tricks have verged on absurd, such as the 20-year-old white Ohio woman who claimed she was attacked by assailants who carved a "B" (for Barak) on her cheek in anger at the John McCain sticker on her car.

She later admitted fabricating the story. In addition, the "B" was carved in reverse, as if done with the help of a mirror.

Experts say that when an election approaches, just about anything goes, as Democrats tend to focus on get-out-the-vote efforts while Republicans aim to sway undecided voters and hope that low turnout will bode well for conservatives.

This election season, both sides have seized on allegations of fraud, after authorities launched an investigation into the nationwide community activist group ACORN for allegedly attempting to swell the voter rolls by registering people who don't exist.

Meanwhile, television, mail and Internet advertising by the campaigns, political action committees and advocacy groups have taken an increasingly negative turn on both sides.

Potential voters in key swing states have also been swamped with ideological mailings -- including one DVD from the Clarion Fund called "Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West," which has been mailed to 28 million people.

The Clarion Fund insists it simply aims to "raise awareness because people are being lulled into a false sense of security," said communications director Gregory Ross.

"By law we are not allowed to take sides on any election."

Some early W.Va. voters angry over switched votes

Jackson County touch-screens switched votes, 3 residents say
At least three early voters in Jackson County had a hard time voting for candidates they want to win.
By Paul J. Nyden
Staff writer

At least three early voters in Jackson County had a hard time voting for candidates they want to win.

Virginia Matheney and Calvin Thomas said touch-screen machines in the county clerk's office in Ripley kept switching their votes from Democratic to Republican candidates.

"When I touched the screen for Barack Obama, the check mark moved from his box to the box indicating a vote for John McCain," said Matheney, who lives in Kenna.

When she reported the problem, she said, the poll worker in charge "responded that everything was all right. It was just that the screen was sensitive and I was touching the screen too hard. She instructed me to use only my fingernail."

Even after she began using her fingernail, Matheney said, the problem persisted.

When she tried to vote for candidates running for two open seats on the Supreme Court, the electronic machine canceled her second vote twice.

On her third try, Matheney managed to cast votes for both Menis Ketchum and Margaret Workman, Democratic candidates for the two open seats.

Calvin Thomas, 81, who retired from Kaiser Aluminum in Ravenswood in 1983 and now lives in Ripley, experienced the same problem.

"When I pushed Obama, it jumped to McCain. When I went down to governor's office and punched [Gov. Joe] Manchin, it went to the other dude. When I went to Karen Facemyer [the incumbent Republican state senator], I pushed the Democrat, but it jumped again.

"The rest of them were OK, but the machine sent my votes for those top three offices from the Democrat to the Republican," Thomas said.

"When I hollered about that, the girl who worked there said, 'Push it again.' I pushed Obama again and it stayed there. Then, the machine did the same thing for other candidates.

"Why didn't she [the polling clerk] tell me before I even used the machine that might happen? And how many people, especially my age, didn't notice that? "Jackson County is a Republican county. I am a registered Republican, but I have been voting Democrat since the 1990s."

Thomas, who brought his daughter with him to the polls, said she had the same problem.

"After I finished, my daughter voted. When she pushed Obama, it went to McCain. It happened to her the same way it happened to me. If the poll worker knew that, why didn't she tell me before I even pushed the button?"

Deputy Secretary of State Sarah Bailey said, "When we received a call about this, we immediately called the county and told them to recalibrate the machines to make sure the finger-touch lines up with the ballot.

"Sometimes machines can become miscalibrated when they are moved from storage facilities to early voting areas," Bailey said Friday. "We get a couple of calls about this each election year."

Most voting machines in most counties do work properly, Bailey added.

Jackson County Clerk Jeff Waybright said, "After we got a call from the Secretary of State's Office, we recalibrated the machine. We had already voted over 400 people with no problems."

Voting problems occur when voters touch the screen, Waybright said, but do not put their fingers inside boxes for their candidates.

Waybright blamed the problem on voters.

"People make mistakes more than the machines," he said, "but I went in yesterday and recalibrated the machines. We are doing everything we can not to disenfranchise anybody."

Matheney remains concerned.

"Leaving the polling place," she said, "I wondered how many voters might not have noticed that their vote was switched on the machine."

Federal Agents Report

A Report From Miguel A. Contreras, a U.S. Federal Agent, concerning: Northwestern Theological Seminary

Dear Christian Friends:

It is with great appreciation for this educational ministry and as an encouragement to you, that I write this short message in response to your interest in attending Northwestern.

I can attest that Northwestern has very stringent standards and expectations from the students. Christian Alliance Ministries has two professional educational ministries. These include Northwestern Christian University and Northwestern Theological Seminary. Northwestern is state authorized and theologically accredited and should definitively not be compared with deceptive organizations, many of which are headquartered overseas, which are advertising on the Internet and are nothing less than diploma mills, granting valueless degrees.

As a Federal Agent attached to several bureaus of the Department of the Treasury, I have over twenty-four years of working as an agent with the US federal government, BATF, DEA, CUSTOMS and INTERNAL AFFAIRS and I have traveled all over the world specializing in Internet fraud and other types of investigations. In fact, I have visited and developed fellowships with high-ranking officials of well-known higher education institutions all over the world.

I had the opportunity of having attended Michigan State University (MSU) where I obtained my BA, and completed one year of graduate work in criminal justice administration in 1981, the year I accepted a job with the US government on the West coast and had to relocate. MSU was one of the top universities offering under-graduate and graduate degrees in criminal justice. I also attended the University of Leicester's graduate program in security management, in the UK.

In 2002, I engaged in extensive biblical studies and received ordinations as a minister/reverend from Christian organizations after passing rigorous written examinations. Later, I decided to look for a theological institution offering quality education. After spending considerable time researching the Internet looking for what I considered a good graduate school offering Master and Doctoral degrees at a reasonable expense, I found Northwestern Theological Seminary (NTS). In comparison with other schools which charged anywhere from $5,000 to $100,000 to complete a graduate degree programs in theology, I opted for Northwestern Theological Seminary, which provided the quality of a state authorized educational program with theological accreditation at a cost that was affordable, by Love Offer to the ministry. Believe me, I prayed to the Lord for days before I applied with Northwestern. I asked the Holy Spirit to lead me and show me the way.....Then finally, as a test, I wrote to Northwestern Theological Seminary and offered a complex theological question which was immediately answered.....this was not a one single line response......Dr. Sarkela's response took almost one full page, single spaced....He quoted the Bible extensively and what he wrote made sense.....I was convinced as a servant and follower of our Father in Heaven and the Lord Jesus Christ, that Northwestern Theological Seminary, was a good school. Therefore, without any reservation, I highly recommend Northwestern Christian University, Northwestern Theological Seminary and Christian Alliance Ministries, Worldwide Educational and Evangelistic Ministries.

‘Joe The Plumber’ Comes Clean: ‘I Would Be Receiving Obama’s Tax Cuts’

October 17, 2008

As ThinkProgress and many others noted yesterday, the premise of Joe “the Plumber” Wurzelbacher’s complaints about Barack Obama’s tax plan was ill-informed. Contrary to Wurzelbacher’s claims, “neither his personal taxes nor those of the business where he works are likely to rise if Mr. Obama’s tax plan were to go into effect.”

As CBS News reported, even “Joe The Plumber” acknowledges this fact now:

So today, Joe, who said he makes much less than $250,000, reluctantly admitted Obama would lower his taxes.

“I would, if you believe him, I would be receiving his tax cuts,” Wurzelbacher said.

Bloomberg reports that “one other problem in making Wurzelbacher a symbol of the overtaxed” is that — even if he did earn an adjusted gross income of $280,000 — “he would pay just $773 more in taxes under Obama’s plan than McCain’s.” That amount would hardly deal a crippling blow to his potential small business.

Last night, Sarah Palin said she didn’t want to talk about Wurzelbacher. “I begged our speechwriters, ‘Don’t make me say Joe the Plumber, please, in any speeches,” she said. After failing to properly vet Wurzelbacher’s situation, the McCain campaign is apparently now throwing him overboard and moving on.

The campaign is holding a conference call today with Russ Deker, an individual the McCain camp is calling “a Missouri ‘Joe the Plumber.’”

So Very Very Sad

Al-Jazeera: Palin supporters fear 'blacks will take over'
10/16/2008 @ 12:09 pm
Filed by David Edwards and Muriel Kane

Supporters of Sarah Palin attending a rally in St. Clairsville, OH on Sunday were not shy about displaying their racist attitudes and their ignorance about Barack Obama -- along with their very real fears and insecurities -- to al-Jazeera reporter Casey Kauffman.

One white-haired old lady said frankly to Kauffman, "I'm afraid if he wins, the blacks will take over." She then added more shrilly, "He's not a Christian! This is a Christian nation! What is our country going to end up like?"

Another woman stated, "Obama and his wife, I'm concerned that they could be anti-white, that he might hide that." A third suggested, "I don't like the fact that he thinks us white people are trash -- because we're not."

A young man holding a baby told Kauffman, "He seems like a sheep -- or a wolf in sheep's clothing -- to be honest with you. And I believe, Palin, she's filled with the holy spirit."

St. Clairsville lies just a dozen miles west of Wheeling, WV, in largely-white southeastern Ohio, which was a Bush stronghold in 2000 and 2004. One Daily Kos diarist who commented on the video wrote, "I am originally from a small town 30 miles away from St Clairsville, and seeing this clip reminds me of what it was like to live there. St Clairsville is actually sort of a metropolis in this rust belt region. To many farmers, steelworkers, and coal miners who live in the surrounding countryside, it's known for being 'where the WalMart is.'"

A few days earlier, a blogger had interviewed audience members at a McCain-Palin rally in Strongsville, OH, in the northern part of the state, and reported that "this is the most strange, ignorant, uninformed, angry, up-to-no-good, and gullible group of people I’ve ever seen at a political rally."

Although ABC News described Palin as having toned down her rhetoric a notch on Sunday, the Kos diarist quoted her as telling the crowd, "We know who the bad guys are, OK? We know that in the war, it’s terrorists, terrorists who hate America and her allies and would seek to destroy us, and the bad guys are those who would support and sympathize with the terrorists."

Palin's supporters clearly took those remarks as refering to Obama, with several of them saying to Kauffman, "He's related to a known terrorist" or "He's friends with a terrorist of this country" or "He must support terrorists."

However, not all St. Clairsville residents are Republicans, and another Kos diarist, who reported on a well-received Joe Biden rally in the same town two days later, made it clear that "Ohio and WV Democrats don't like Sarah Palin at all. Much of the conversation before the rally was about her. And you might be surprised to know that a lot of people that you might not think are internet savvy are hip to Palin's ties to the AIP and are horrified by it."

The al-Jazeera crew interviewed one St. Clairsville Obama supporter who, they report, has been "shocked at the names he's been called by his own neighbors."

"I've been called the n-word," this man stated. "I've been called a Muslim, I've been called a un-American." He went on to say, "The tension's getting thicker and thicker. People like that, it's starting to scare me. ... I'm afraid some of these people might try to hurt Obama."

Message to Residents in Greensboro and High Point, North Carolina (USA)

Thursday, October 9, 2008 at 17:90 hours...

On the following date, while at a store on Brentwood Street in High Point, North Carolina, what we witnessed was most horrifying. We seen several citizens coming out a store and stopped briefly to speak to one another. Some of them stopped and viewed the items sold to them in the store to make sure all was correct. Suddenly, 5 police cars came up to the store and, with guns drawn, made all of those innocent people answer questions about an SUV sitting at the store. The police then placed all of them in handcuffs while slamming them on concrete. Several citizens had massive bruises and lumps on their bones. They begged the officers to let them go because they knew nothing about an SUV. The officers told them to shut up or they would make them and a few minutes later, a young lady came out who was driving the SUV. The officers asked her was she the owner and she said no. She stated that her boyfriend owned the vehicle and allowed her to drive it, showing the keys to the police as proof. She was told that the SUV was reported stolen. The lady stated that she would get it all right and then drove away. However, the officers still had several citizens in handcuffs and was slow in removing them. One of the citizens stated that he would be calling the officers supervisor. This made the officers very angry. They then took the guy's head and slammed it into concrete and placed him back in handcuffs. He was told that he was interfering with an investigation and was going to jail. The officers then ran into the store and took the inside surveillance camera tape from its compartment, then came out and said, "now you don't have any proof do you"? Everyone who was coming to the store was ordered to leave or be shot. This is what is going on in Guilford County, North Carolina.

Note: Whether your young teenagers are black or caucasian, the police have launched a move against them all. Between 10pm and 4am, if your teenagers are not in their homes, they will be accused of crimes they know little or nothing about. Hundreds have been ran into the police stations within Guilford County, whether in Greensboro or High Point, North Carolina within the last 2 weeks. Our cousins, and our friends' relatives and friends who work for the sheriff department says what is going on in North Carolina is spreading rapidly throughout the US. We all have been instructed to keep our children close because police have launched an all out attack on the youth. Hundreds of us have police scanners along with our cop relatives and what we hear on a daily basis is nothing short of horrific. North Carolina residents, they are accusing many of being armed and dangerous, giving them the right to shoot to kill. So please be careful.
Fox cops and Charlie cops are on the scene. Be very careful.........

Is the Federal Reserve Engaged in Acts of Economic Warfare Against America?

The answer is obvious. You’ve probably already figured it out: The Federal Reserve is at war with America. It’s an economic war, of course, not a bombs-and-bullets war. The casualties, though, are just as real: Savings accounts, retirement funds, bank accounts, jobs, businesses, pensions and much more.

By counterfeiting trillions of dollars like a Sachsenhausen operation on steroids, the Fed is carpet-bombing the U.S. economy with an unprecedented flood of fiat currency, causing the exact same economic destruction intended by the Nazis in World War II (but on a much more devastating scale). And it’s doing this as part of a new economic war.

Is the Federal Reserve Engaged in Acts of Economic Warfare Against America?

Mike Adams
Natural News
Wednesday, Oct 8, 2008

In 1942, German intelligence officers rounded up skilled Jewish prisoners and launched Operation Bernhardt, a clever scheme designed to counterfeit hundreds of millions of dollars worth of British Pounds and destroy the British economy by flooding it with counterfeit money. Located in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, Operation Bernhardt was, even by modern standards, a runaway success that resulted in the creation of forged bank notes worth 132 million British Pounds.

This “economic warfare” operation resulted in a devastating economic effect on the British economy. You can read the true history of this operation here:

It is important to note that Operation Bernhardt was an act of war, specifically pursued for the purpose of destroying Britain’s economy by creating so much new money that the value of the money already in circulation would plummet. This was considered a strategic attack, just as effective as carpet-bombing tank factories or mowing down soldiers on the field with German-made MG42 machine guns. What does all this have to do with the Federal Reserve?

Today, the Federal Reserve is engaged in an eerily similar operation, counterfeiting trillions of dollars in U.S. bank notes and flooding the U.S. money supply with money created from nothing. The result, of course, is the same as was intended by Operation Bernhardt in 1942: The economic destruction of the target nation. Only this time, the target is the United States of America.

Hilariously, the Fed claims it’s doing this to save the economy. Yet the laws of economics tell us that flooding the money supply with trillions of dollars in new money actually harms the economy. And the Fed has been hard at work causing this harm: $250+ billion two weeks ago, $600+ billion last week and $900 billion earlier this week! It’s beginning to crank up the printing presses to the tune of a trillion dollars a week, and by doing so, it’s contributing to the destruction of the U.S. economy at a pace the Third Reich could have barely imagined.

Has the Fed declared war on the working class?
If the actions pursued by the Federal Reserve were being masterminded by Al-Qaeda, they would be denounced as acts of war. In World War II, such actions were deliberate acts of war. Targeting the economy for destruction by flooding the money supply with counterfeit currency is, by any measure, a threat to any nation.

So why is the Federal Reserve engaged in actions that, if committed by other nations, would warrant a military response? This is not an idle question. I’m not asking this in a satirical way. I’m quite serious about this: Why is the Fed committing acts of economic warfare against the United States of America? (The Fed, by the way, is a private company. It is not, as you’ve been led to believe, part of the U.S. government.)

Palin Attacks "Racially Tinged"

With all due respect, many on this site have massive race relation issues. It doesn't take a quantum physics scientist to see this. To you all, unless we work together as a whole, all of our children will suffer in ways that many of you can't imagine. How can America seek respect when we don't respect ourselves as a people. It is much to late in the game to be regressing back to racial epithets and bias conclusions. Our enemies are those who placed us in the bind America is in. Not your neighbor or someone who have never said a negative word to you. Lets wake up adults. And as for Conrad73, you are outside the U.S. poisoning those who have to live here daily. If you have any children, how can they have been brought up with without major communication issues. If you try researching some of what is posted instead of criticizing immediately like some government spy, you may learn alot about whats going on in the U.S. that will affect your region shortly.

Why Is Sarah Palin Such a Good Liar For God?

Palin is by the very nature of her beliefs a born, in fact eager, liar. She can do no other. She must lie or admit she is wrong, about just about everything she believes in, from a young earth, to dinosaurs roaming the planet alongside men, to the nature of global warming, to Israel's place of primacy in the prophetic "End Times" and, lately, as to the causes of the economic meltdown. Get inside Palin's head and you'll hear a little girl telling herself biblical stories where she's always the hero. Palin's fantasy world is about being "called" -- Esther-like -- to "save" her people. And lying for God is okay, in fact it's good. Her biblical heroes (King David, Samson, Queen Esther...) all lied for God when they needed to in order to defeat God's enemies.

Palin is the female version of Bill Murray in the movie Caddyshack fantasizing... "A hush falls on the crowd..." about her destiny of insane godly glory. Only it's not insane, but real, real as McCain's calculated I'll-win-at-all-costs ploy in choosing a fanatic as a running mate.

The election of 2008 is best be understood as (what I and all sane Americans hope) is the last gasp of the desperate born-again religious movement that that has been running America into the ground for the last eight years. A pessimist might see it otherwise. Maybe it's the first shot in the next phase of our internal wars of religion, otherwise known as the culture wars, wherein an ignorant hate-filled, frightened American minority is trying to impose on the United States its own version of religion, in the same way that Saudi fanatics have imposed strict Islam on their unfortunate fellow citizens.

Palin was actually correct when, in her debate with Senator Biden, she said we need to stand up and "fight for freedom." What she didn't mention was that the greatest threat to American freedom is coming from the unhinged religious fanatics who are feeding on her poisonous lies, re-energized by a vision of overt "he's not like us!" racist politics on behalf of their God.

Why Is Sarah Palin Such a Good Liar For God?

You can't understand Palin without understanding her movement's mentors that crafted the modern Evangelical involvement in politics "for the cause of Christ." These mentors include my late father and also the so-called Dominion Theology movement, led by people even more radical than my father was. Dominion Theology is a subset of Dominionism and Christian Reconstructionism or the "Theonomy" movement. Followers believe that the God revealed in the Bible is the sole source of all human law, and that "God's law" must be established in America. This is the American version of the Taliban.

The key Dominionist leader, the late Rousas John Rushdoony, said that Christians should have "dominion" over the earth and every nation in it in the name of not just Jesus Christ but also in the name of the God of the Old Testament. Thus in the best of all worlds we'd be enforcing Old Testament law. We'd be the new version of Calvin's harsh Reformation Geneva wherein heretics were burned and women with illegitimate pregnancies were drowned along with their unborn babies.

The Dominionists have a wide and under-the-mainstream-media radar following in many Evangelical circles. Palin is an ardent Dominionist. I know what her agenda is because I know who shaped the theology of Evangleical political movement she is a product of.

I remember sitting down with Dominionism leader Rushdoony (over 30 years ago) and him telling me this:

"Frank, we must establish God's kingdom by degrees. We can't start by saying that God demands that we put homosexuals to death!" (He laughed heartily) "We need to begin with things like helping form home schools and electing our people. Someday we'll be in a position to establish biblical law in America."

McCain and Palin are two very different people. McCain was never able to energize the Evangelical base because the base knew that as a world-weary, philandering, gambling-addicted, hard-living fly boy, politician McCain lacked the sincerity of fundamentalist conviction. When trying to speak their language of absolutist morality McCain's words rang hollow. But Palin is the real thing.

Why Is Sarah Palin Such a Good Liar For God?

October 5, 2008

Speaking as a former right wing Evangelical who helped organize the Religious Right in the 1970s and early eighties, nothing instills conviction like believing you're on a mission from God. If you're going to fool others, you have to fool yourself.

It takes sincerity to tell a series of barefaced lies with enough conviction to carry the day. As we close in on the 2008 election, the increasingly desperate Republicans will do what they have learned to do best: court the sincere but misinformed Evangelical voters by lying to them.

Let me explain...

The Evangelicals live in a resentment-fueled, inward-looking subculture. They are convinced that the world is out to get them and put them at a perpetual disadvantage. They equate knowledge, facts and education with an elite that they feel belittled by.

The Evangelical "base" have unwittingly become the enemy of democracy. They are democracy's enemy because a grossly misinformed Evangelical public that celebrates its ignorance is the antithesis of an informed people who can manage their own affairs. Bush was their boy... twice! Enough said.

It is to the white ghetto of willfully ignorant Evangelical Americans to whom Sarah Palin is aiming her smears and lies (and not so subtle racism) about Senator Obama and his "terrorist connection" and his being "not a real American like us." Palin's lies depend for their success on those who are willfully blind to facts. It's the same obdurate blindness that allows a segment of the American public to still believe that Saddam Hussein was behind the attacks of 9/11. But it goes further than that.

The Republican leadership and John McCain are counting on Palin's grass roots sincerity that most Republican leaders no longer have. Palin is a true believer. And true believers put the mission they sincerely believe in -- that God has "laid on their hearts" -- above mere details such as truth or honesty, let alone honor. They also speak with conviction.

Palin doesn't actually believe the rehearsed smears she's telling about Obama, but she does believe that she is morally right in lying.

If lies will help her win, Palin believes God's will is being done. McCain just wants to win an election. Palin has bigger fish to fry. Her "call" is to restore America to its "Christian heritage." In that sense Palin is the product of my late father Francis Schaeffer, who helped politicize the Evangelicals into the Religious Right through his incendiary books such as A Christian Manifesto (1980) wherein he called for the takeover of America in the name of Christ if, need be, by force if all else failed.

Palin Attacks "Racially Tinged"

Huliq News

October 5, 2008

Here is something interesting on Sarah Palin and racism and, I have to admit, somewhat unexpected even from the new equal-time-for-Democrats media. In an analysis piece, the AP write:

By claiming that Democrat Barack Obama is "palling around with terrorists" and doesn't see the U.S. like other Americans, vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin targeted key goals for a faltering campaign.

"And though she may have scored a political hit each time, her attack was unsubstantiated and carried a racially tinged subtext that John McCain himself may come to regret."

This is important because it's hard for candidates to defend themselves from this kind of attack. Something that the electorate does not seem to like -- and Obama and his campaign have understood this from day one -- is a candidate given to self-pity or even self-defense. The classic example of this is Bob Dole snapping "Stop lying about my record". That was a bad moment for Dole -- but really, all he was doing was standing up for himself.

Palin's statements are not overtly racist. Yet by suggesting that Obama is "palling around with terrorists" she's clearly trying to link him -- and his name -- with foreign terrorists. That connection is overt. And when she goes on to say 'This is not a man who sees America like you and I see America", well if Obama isn't like "you and I" -- and remember, this is a Sarah Palin rally, not a Democratic one -- what difference do you think she's trying to stress? I'll give you a hint -- it's not his height.

While these attacks may sound silly to us, they can be dangerous. If unanswered they could possibly tilt low information voters (commonly known as "the American electorate") away from Obama. If the campaign answers them it only serves to draw attention to them, to make the candidate appear self-pitying, and to focus the media on reporting the accusations.

But if the media treat the making of the accusations -- not their content -- as the story the accusations pose at least as much danger to McCain (and Palin) as to Obama. Make no mistake, this article states that John McCain and Sarah Palin are racists, that their appeal to voters is racist and, by implication, that if you vote for McCain and Palin you yourself may be a racist.

That is not a message that McCain and Palin want people to hear.

They don't want that for two reasons. First off, racism doesn't sell in today's America -- even to racists. You need to sugar-coat it a bit. Palin is trying to do that (although, on public financing, they don't seem to be able to afford quite as much sugar for coating as past Republican campaigns). But if the media can be persuaded to report the fact of the McCain / Palin campaign's racism more people will have to think about this issue.

Secondly, McCain and Palin need to think about their legacies -- which is all they'll have left come November 5th. McCain already has a bad history on race. Now Sarah Palin will go down in history not only as the unprepared, empty-headed nitwit who sunk the Republican ticket in 2008, but the racist, unprepared, empty-headed nitwit.

Sarah Palin's Racist Smear Campaign Against Barack Obama

Obama isn't above attacking McCain's character – on the issues. He released an ad on Sunday (Oct. 05) that calls the Republican "erratic" — a suggestion that at 72, McCain's age might be a factor, according to the Associated Press. "Our financial system in turmoil," an announcer says in Obama's new ad. "And John McCain? Erratic in a crisis. Out of touch on the economy." The ad may question his competence, but not his patriotism or his race or suggest that a U.S. Senator is un-American and friendly to terrorists.

In this case, though, the “terrorist” is not some Middle Eastern radical who has threatened America, but William Ayers, who was a member of the Vietnam-era Weather Underground in a radical 1960s group that went out of existence more than 40 years ago. The implication of her remark is false to the point of absurdity.

Ayers and Obama happened to worked on community boards long after Ayers’ renounced his radical youth. Ayers also hosted a political event for Obama early in his career. But there is no evidence to suggest they were “pals” or that Obama subscribed to Ayer’s radical beliefs during the 1960s, when the war in Vietnam sent hundreds of thousands of Americans into the streets in protest.

In fact, Obama was a child when the Weathermen were planting bombs, and he has denounced Ayers' radical views and actions on more than one occasion. "It's a giant changing of the subject," Jenny Backus, a Democratic strategist told the Associated Press. "The problem is the messenger. If you want to start throwing fire bombs, you don't send out the fluffy bunny to do it. I think people don't take Sarah Palin seriously."

Palin, however, has little to lose. Only a minority of voters take her seriously on the issues. Her strength is her charm, and she can throw mud up against the wall with little recourse to her already low credibility. If it sticks, mission accomplished. If not, she can smile her way through it while McCain keeps his distance. The only saving grace is the fact that Palin didn’t deliver the remarks with much conviction. Hopefully it’s a sign that even she has some shred of decency.

The McCain campaign is desperate to return the focus of the campaign back on Obama. During the credit meltdown, most of the nation has been focused on the economy, and Obama has steadily gained in the polls. In the last 30 days of the campaign, many undecided voters will finally start focusing on the race and start making up their minds about the candidates.

Obama's ties to Ayers as well as convicted felon Antoin "Tony" Rezko and the minister Jeremiah Wright are potential sore spots. But Palin is equally vulnerable on her extremist “end of days” religious beliefs, her shameful treatment of rape victims, and her cronyism in office.

After one presidential debate and one vice presidential debate, McCain is continuing to lose ground to Obama among voters, especially independents, according to the latest poll.

Fortunately, voters seem to be more aware that dirty campaign charges are likely to be untrue and seem to have less tolerance for them this time around. If so, this could easily turn out to be another instance where the McCain campaign shoots itself in the foot.

Sarah Palin's Racist Smear Campaign Against Barack Obama

October 5, 2008

John McCain, Sarah Palin

With about a month to go before the November general election, the campaign of Republican John McCain is getting desperate. In revealing moment, McCain showed just how low he is ready to go to wrest votes from Democrat Barack Obama.

On the campaign trail over the weekend, GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin assailed Obama for “palling around with terrorists.” The effort was patently racist and clearly tried to tie Obama to Middle Eastern terrorists, when nothing could be further from the truth.

Palin’s attack, unsubstantiated and racially tinged, showed a clear change in direction for the campaign and a potentially changing role for her. In this election, where voters seem to be particularly intolerant of mud-slinging, McCain may come to regret the move. But it seems clear, at least at the moment, that Palin has taken up the same role as former Maryland Gov. Spiro Agnew, the vice presidential running mate of former President Richard Nixon, the GOP's godfather of dirty campaign tricks.

Agnew was used as a vicious campaign attack dog smearing Nixon’s opponents, the press and anyone else to play on the prejudices of voters. Meanwhile, Nixon was allowed to remain above the fray.

Since then, Republicans have become known for dirty personal attacks. George H.W. Bush criticized Democrat Michael Dukakis over the furlough granted to Willie Horton, a black convicted murderer who raped a woman and stabbed her companion after his release. The Vietnam-era Swift Boat attack Democrat John Kerry created a cloud around Kerry’s war record, enough to off-set the fact that George W. Bush dodged the war in the Texas National Guard. After the election, too late to help Kerry, the Swift Boat attack was widely discredited.

It worked back then, but it could easily backfire now. The time and the mood of the public are clearly different.

Here's how Palin recently tried to paint Obama: "Our opponent ... is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect, imperfect enough, that he's palling around with terrorists who would target their own country," she told a group of donors in Englewood, Colo.

The attempt to smear Obama was deliberate. Palin repeated the line at three separate events Saturday (Oct 4). "This is not a man who sees America like you and I see America," she said. "We see America as a force of good in this world. We see an America of exceptionalism."

AP Switches Tanks, Calls Palin a Racist

The new Associated Press guidelines on election coverage have been controversial, due mostly to the role of Washington Bureau Chief Ron Fournier, a probable Republican and admirer of John McCain. Fournier's new rules allow more of a reporter's voice in wire reports, less caging about "fairness", and generally ask that AP writers say it like it is. What that led to earlier this year annoyed liberals to no end. But at some point the race shifted in Obama's favor, and the AP followed suit. Last month they ran a devastating analysis piece on how John McCain lies about everything—that piece was instrumental in changing the McCain media narrative for good. But the selection of Sarah Palin has really sent the wire service right into the famous tank. This weekend they called Palin a big racist!

The headline: Analysis: Palin's words carry racial tinge. AP writer Douglass K. Daniel says Palin's new post-debate smear-y stump speech was basically disgusting. The speech (a second draft was just released for use today by the way!) accuses Obama of "palling around with terrorists who would destroy our own country," a veiled reference to former Weatherman Bill Ayers but left vague enough to insinuate, say, Osama bin Laden.

In other words, Palin is now a big cute racist email forward disguised as a candidate for Vice President. But because no one takes her seriously at all anymore, all she'll manage to do is hurt McCain's credibility even more, and leave him even more open to charges of acting dishonorably. And he'll get even angrier! By the third debate (if McCain shows up) he won't even shake Obama's hand. Just watch!

Previously: The AP wrote the best-lead sentence-ever on Governor Palin: "ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Less than a week after balking at the Alaska Legislature's investigation into her alleged abuse of power, Gov. Sarah Palin on Monday indicated she will cooperate with a separate probe run by people she can fire."

Albright slams Palin for misquote

10/05/2008 @ 9:44 pm
Filed by RAW STORY

Alaska Governor and vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin is the recipient of harsh criticism from former Secretary of State and UN Ambassador Madeleine K. Albright after Albright was misquoted at a Saturday rally in Carson, California.

"What advice do you have for women who want respect from their male colleagues?" Dana Philbin of Chicago asked Albright for a January piece in Time Magazine.

"Women have to be active listeners and interrupters," she responded, "but when you interrupt, you have to know what you are talking about. I also think it is important for women to help one another. I have a saying: There is a special place in hell for women who don't."

"There's a place in Hell reserved for women who don't support other women," Palin said on Saturday, rewording a version of the same quote on another source: a Starbucks coffee cup.

"Though I am flattered that Governor Palin has chosen to cite me as a source of wisdom," Albright told the Huffington Post, "what I said had nothing to do with politics. This is yet another example of McCain and Palin distorting the truth, and all the more reason to remember that this campaign is not about gender, it is about which candidate has an agenda that will improve the lives of all Americans, including women. The truth is, if you care about the status of women in our society and in our troubled economy, the best choice by far is Obama-Biden."

A clip of Palin's speech appears below.

Ammunition To Use Against the “New, Improved” Bailout Proposal

Tuesday, Sept 30, 2008

The financial elite will propose a “new, improved” version of the bailout bill in the next couple of days. Here is some advanced ammunition to use against the proposal:

Paulson and Congress pretended that the first bailout bill capped the initial round of funding to $200 billion, and capped executive compensation. However, treasury officials have admitted (when they thought the public wasn’t listening) that the restrictions on disbursing more than 200 big ones and CEO compensation were lies that wouldn’t be enforced (you can listen to their statements yourself: here’s part 1 of 5)
The boys pretended that the bailout was limited to $700 billion. But that was not true (see the final vesion of the bailout proposal on page 40). Indeed, a Bloomberg analyst says that the bailout could balloon to $5 trillion dollars. And remember that “in the months before the March 2003 Iraq invasion, the Bush administration estimated the Iraq war would cost no more than $50 billion“, but it will end up costing at least $3 trillion dollars
The snake oil salesmen said the bailout was needed to save the economy. But most experts who have looked at the bailout said it wasn’t needed, wouldn’t have worked, and would actually have made the economic crisis worse
Unless the new bailout proposal will actually help Americans, use the above proven lies by the proponents of the original bailout monster to argue that the liars cannot be believed, and that the fruit of the poisonous tree is itself poisonous.

Cyber Security Expert: Hackers Planning To Steal Election For McCain

Spoonamore says electronic voting machines represent national security threat, Israel, China and Russia have capability to rig presidential outcome...

Tuesday, September 30, 2008

Stephen Spoonamore warns in a new interview that electronic voting machines represent a national security threat and that hackers are already planning to steal the 2008 presidential election for John McCain.

Spoonamore is a GOP member and a lifelong Republican, having worked on election campaigns with Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg. He also has 20 years worth of experience in encrypted and networked communications systems for banks, TV, telecommunications, EMS, Military and other uses.

In an ten part You Tube interview, Spoonamore warns that hackers are planning to steal the election on behalf of the McCain camp and even predicts the margin of victory, that McCain will make a “shocking recovery” and win 51.2 percent of the vote with three electoral votes over Obama.

“This is a national security threat,” said Spoonamore, “it is very possible for a foreign government to begin manipulating that transmission of code just as they attempt to do fairly often with our financial data….we deal with it every day on the commercial side,” he added, noting that China, and not the American people, has a greater chance of choosing the next U.S. president.

Spoonamore also fingered Israel as another foreign government that was planning to attempt to hack the 2008 election.

“We don’t know who’s changing the vote now - these weird results are coming in all over,” said Spoonamore, adding that the danger of the vote being hacked by Israel, China or Russia is an even greater threat than partisan vote fraud on behalf of the Democrats and Republicans.

“You’ve built a vulnerable system and many people would want to exploit that vulnerability and not all of them have the best interests of our nation at heart,” he added.

In the interview, Spoonamore stresses how easy it is to hack an electronic voting machine and rig an election.

“If people think that a voting machine that calls in to a tabulator is any different than all those cash registers calling in to the central processor - it’s the same thing,” said Spoonamore. “If you put a man in the middle attack, a computer sitting in the middle that can change or capture or manipulate the information, it will do so,” he added.

“It’s valuable to be president….if you can steal it for a couple of million bucks why not,” said Spoonamore, adding that the last two presidential elections were stolen.

Spoonamore said that he had personally witnessed people attempting to hack election systems and since going public with his testimony had received threats not to talk about vote fraud because it would undermine American’s confidence in the voting process, to which Spoonamore responded that people should doubt their vote because “it’s being stolen”.

Spoonamore said that top Republican operatives had told him that election hacking was “just a different methodology” but they didn’t grasp the fact that if you build a hackable system, “there’s hundreds of sharks that want to hack it and you will not know who the final hacker was.”

Spoonamore said that the only way to prevent elections being stolen is a complete return to paper ballots, a “move back to what worked so well for 190 years,” and the elimination of electronic voting machines.

Bush & McCain Blackmail America With Economic Terrorism

But this is merely scratching the surface. As Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky., said, “This massive bailout is not a solution. It is financial socialism and it’s un-American.” In fact properly defined, one could label it “national socialism,” otherwise known as fascism.

As professor of economics at New York University Nouriel Roubini framed it, welcome to the United Socialist States of America and “the most radical regime change in global economic and financial affairs in decades”.

The plan was drawn up months ago, lying in wait for the right crisis to see it enacted, just as the Patriot Act was prepared well in advance of 9/11.

The Treasury’s fact sheet about the bailout states, “The Secretary will have the discretion, in consultation with the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, to purchase other assets, as deemed necessary to effectively stabilize financial markets.”

This gives the government and the Federal Reserve carte blanche to do whatever they want to long as it is done in the name of stabilizing financial markets, they can nationalize any company or industry and use taxpayer money, above and beyond the initial $700 billion, for whatever purpose is deemed necessary, without any oversight. Paulson’s bailout plan is also unreviewable by any court, it will remain in perpetuity.

Paulson’s draft bailout plans says: “The Secretary’s authority to purchase mortgage-related assets under this Act shall be limited to $700,000,000,000 outstanding at any one time.”

As Chris Martenson writes, “This means that $700 billion is NOT the cost of this dangerous legislation, it is only the amount that can be outstanding at any one time. After, say, $100 billion of bad mortgages are disposed of, another $100 billion can be bought. In short, these four little words assure that there is NO LIMIT to the potential size of this bailout. This means that $700 billion is a rolling amount, not a ceiling.”

“The bill would bar courts from reviewing actions taken under its authority,” reports Bloomberg.

The Bush administration seeks “dictatorial power unreviewable by the third branch of government, the courts, to try to resolve the crisis,” said Frank Razzano, a former assistant chief trial attorney at the Securities and Exchange Commission now at Pepper Hamilton LLP in Washington. “We are taking a huge leap of faith.”

“It sounds like Paulson is asking to be a financial dictator, for a limited period of time,” said historian John Steele Gordon.

Reporter Larisa Alexandrovna calls it “the final stages of the coup,” noting, “This manufactured crisis is now to be remedied, if the fiscal fascists get their way, with the total transfer of Congressional powers (the few that still remain) to the Executive Branch and the total transfer of public funds into corporate (via government as intermediary) hands.”

The legislation would provide billions to foreign central banks in addition to private foreign banks.

The proposed move represents a total shift of U.S. taxpayers’ funds into the hands of powerful private interests, some of which do not even represent American companies.

The bailout bill represents the most fascist centralization of power in America since 9/11 and the Patriot Act - and many would argue that it even trumps that. The fiscal terrorists hope to ram through their agenda by appealing to people’s fears about the economy, their jobs, their houses and their pensions. But the temporary pain brought on by a Wall Street crash and a severe recession would be nothing compared to the long term death knell that the bailout bill would mean to the free market and economic liberty in America.
