Don't think it will happen, I believe that the US "Empire" like all empires in history is a temporary entity. I think we have been watching the early stages for some years now.

I believe that it is a poor child who denies their heritage, and to remove reference to the nations history is to do it a disservice.
Australia the nation, came into existence because of British settlement. If the british had not settled here, it would have been another european or asian nation. If this had been the case then there would an obligation to aknowledge our french, dutch, russian, chinese or whatever heritage. History cleary shows that the british established settlements here and primarily british formed the Commonwealth of Australia (the nation state of Australia). Republic or not, our nation's roots are firmly british and no amount of pretending will change that.

This was in fact news to me as well, I discovered it while googling to confirm what I had believed (that the 1967 referendum marked the gaining of citizenship by indigineous people)
The flag represents the nation and its history, people have fought and died under the current flag in many wars and warlike situations over the life of this nation, and to change the flag, I thin, disrespects all who have served the people and the nation of Australia.
Just my View, but when you are in a war zone, and you look up at our flag, it does make you feel closer to home.
