All I need to know is how serious you are about your question and how serious of an answer are you willing to LISTEN TO, before I waste my time writing kilometers of good reasoning and you flush it down the toilet.
Hmmm Fear is a scary thing... I am terrified any time the American government and poeple "fear" anyone. It´s bad news and good excuses for trampling over wherever they want and taking whatever they want. UN who?
They DO have problems and they´re very concrete ones too. Like fleeing from war. They´ll do anything, proposing marriage is one of the possible ways out. I feel sory for them.
1, I eat a little bit of everything, I don´t believe vegetarianism is necessarily better. I believe a healthy diet is one that respects one´s body needs.
2, to me environmental awareness has little to do with what you eat. Everything we feed on can be grown in an ethical manner, and we all need to feed. The problem is not WHAT you eat, but HOW it is produced.
3, I insist environment problems have MUCH MORE to do with population growth than ANYTHING else we want to blame.
In most parts of Brazil except a few capitals, neighbors will call the police if there are signs of violence next door. The cops will arrive, ring the bell, ask what´s going on: if there´s a break-in or something, they will interfere, but if the man answers the door and says "it´s nothing, I´m just sorting things out with my wife", the cops will say "thank you, sir", call it a day and leave.
The whole last ten years have been rough times and have changed me a lot. I´ll be glad when this stage of life is finally over. Breast cancer, loads of surgery, loads of medicine, the fact that I almost died and my life and my family´s were shattered to bits; then a relationship with an abuser, a miscarriage and a painful separation when life, which seemed to be getting back on tracks, fell apart again.
Only now I´ve managed the strength to gather my life up again. It´s been a slow, difficult process putting it back together. I feel tired, sick of it, sometimes I think I won´t make it. But I´ve also learned a lot and changed priorities, I´m as alive and kicking as coud be, and in the end I think I´m very lucky and that it´s no big deal compared to what other people, like Kitty, have been through.
Yeah I was thinking the same. I think it´s more coherent if instead of Obama changing colors, the House did. It could become a Black House, not only in name. Why not paint it all black? Would look nice. While they´re at it, they might as well paint black that tribute to Bill Clinton that stands in a lake right in front of the House. Would also be coherent.
Maybe you´ve heard this one, but I thought it would be an interesting occasion to post it.
HOW TRADITIONS, BELIEFS AND CULTURAL HABITS ARE BORN
Lock up 5 monkeys in a cage, hang up some bananas and leave a ladder beneath them. Eventually one of the monkeys will try to go up the ladder and reach the bananas. Every time one of them does that, you hose them with high pressure cold water. Soon they will stop trying.
Remove one of the monkeys. put in another one who knows nothing about the hosing. It will try to reach the bananas, but every time it tries, the 4 other monkeys will beat him up for "being stupid". Soon it will acquire the habit of beating up whichever monkey tries to reach the bananas, although he´s never stopped to "think" why.
Remove another of the original monkeys and insert a new one. The other 5 will beat it up every time it tries to reach for the bananas, including the first "new" monkey.
Go on substituting them one by one until all 5 monkeys in the cage are "new" ones and know nothing about the hosing. They will still not try to reach the bananas or beat each other up if one of them tries, but none of them really knows why.
That´s why we... well you can finish this sentence for me in your own words.
Ok what are you up to tonight and what beer goes with it?
Me: going out with friends to watch a pop concert and dance. Beer: bad cheap Brazilian beer called Brahma. Nothing like the great draft beer you get in Europe. Likely to have a headache tomorrow.
I wanted to address this post carefully. I think it´s a very interesting point of view you have. It´s made me think, because I avoid fanatism and radicalism as much as I can, but thinking about it, I´m a radical myself, so I´ll have to do some thinking about that. Your country supports many environment protection programs around the world and is one of the countries with the highest ratio of protected forest. How do you see those programs, do you think the money is being well invested or is it just for show off? How´s the money raised internally and who defines the policies on its application? Those are the first questions I´m curious about, but feel free if there´s anything else you know and may want to tell us about.
You´re still welcome to talk if you like! I´m hoping we can avoid idiotic humor (although humor is welcome of course, well you know what I mean) in this thread and have some decent, friendly, instructive, productive, quality talk... If you like the subject, please do stay!
I´ve read some of your posts. You seem to be very aware, as you said, regarding your lifestyle. Do you also follow what´s going on in the world? Ecobusiness, market tendencies, public policies, global agreements, data on environment loss and so on? Welcome, good to see you here too!!
By "serious" I mean are you involved in any work concerning the environment, as a volunteer or through your job in any way, or are you an activist, that sort of thing...
Anyone seriously interested in exchanging ideas and news on the subject? I´d like to meet you people and talk "outside the joke area". Please introduce yourselves! Either mail me or post here, but I´d rather you post so that we all know who everyone is. I hope there´s a lot of us around!
