RE: When did you stop believing is Santa Claus?

From Wiki.....
"Father Christmas is the traditional English name for the personification of Christmas. Although now known as a Christmas gift-bringer, and normally considered to be synonymous with American culture's Santa Claus which is now known worldwide, he was originally part of an unrelated and much older English folkloric tradition. The recognisably modern figure of the English Father Christmas developed in the late Victorian period, but Christmas had been personified for centuries before then.

English personifications of Christmas were first recorded in the 15th century, with Father Christmas himself first appearing in the mid 17th century in the aftermath of the English Civil War. The Puritan-controlled English government had legislated to abolish Christmas, considering it papist, and had outlawed its traditional customs. Royalist political pamphleteers, linking the old traditions with their cause, adopted Old Father Christmas as the symbol of 'the good old days' of feasting and good cheer. Following the Restoration in 1660, Father Christmas's profile declined. His character was maintained during the late 18th and into the 19th century by the Christmas folk plays later known as mummers plays.

Until Victorian times, Father Christmas was concerned with adult feasting and merry-making. He had no particular connection with children, nor with the giving of presents, nocturnal visits, stockings or chimneys. But as later Victorian Christmases developed into child-centric family festivals, Father Christmas became a bringer of gifts. The popular American myth of Santa Claus arrived in England in the 1850s and Father Christmas started to take on Santa's attributes. By the 1880s the new customs had become established, with the nocturnal visitor sometimes being known as Santa Claus and sometimes as Father Christmas. He was often illustrated wearing a long red hooded gown trimmed with white fur."

RE: Good answer me thinks

thumbs up

I would rather people said "seasons greetings" than "Happy Holidays" if they really cannot bring themselves to say Merry Christmas.

Cannot understand why it got changed, especially as those that say 'Happy Holidays" will still exchange presents on the 25th.

Merry Christmas cheering

RE: Living in another country

Living in another country is fun, interesting and a great way to broaden one's views about the world.

It can also be very beautiful and warm.

RE: USA Vetoes UN Security Council Egypt-drafted resolution that Status in Jerusalem not change

A one state would never work, too many would undermine any agreements to destroy what remained of Israel, the solution is a two state system, but that was destroyed by Trump.

RE: USA Vetoes UN Security Council Egypt-drafted resolution that Status in Jerusalem not change

Really? I guess your bias against Obama has clouded your judgement because although Obama (like me) dispised Netanyahu, he certainly did a huge amount to support and continue the allegiance between the USA and Israel, again, moderate Israelis were very happy with Obama, it was only the far right wing and in particular Netanyahu that had a problem with Obama.

Quote from the Guardian.....
"Obama’s actual record over his eight years in office makes him one of the most pro-Israeli American presidents since Harry S Truman. Obama has given Israel considerably more money and arms than any of his predecessors. He has fully lived up to America’s formal commitment to preserve Israel’s “qualitative military edge” by supplying his ally with ever more sophisticated weapons systems. His parting gift to Israel was a staggering military aid package of $38bn for the next 10 years. This represents an increase from the current $3.1 to $3.8bn per annum. It is also the largest military aid package from one country to another in the annals of human history."

RE: USA Vetoes UN Security Council Egypt-drafted resolution that Status in Jerusalem not change

I never said nor implied that there was peace, but up till now there was always the chance for discussion and negotiation, Trump has single-handedly ended the opportunity for any further negotiation, all because he wanted to look good and boost his own ego.
So where is the son in law in all this? I recall that Trump said his son in law would solve the Crisis in the ME. Strange that he has been so quiet.

Very true, but Freedom of Speech allows even arseholes to voice an opinion, nothing to do with respect IMO.

RE: Taking a knee and not standing for the flag

WHY? Freedom of Speech is exactly that, so either you agree with it or are against it, there cannot be degrees of Freedom of speech.

RE: North Korea

And that's fine, after all, he needs you to watch and buy his vast range of products, at hugely inflated prices, but you like him and want to keep him rich and in a tycoons lifestyle.
And even though he lies and makes false accusations and even lies about his products, it is those with little or no brains that keep him going, so good for you for admitting you are gullible and have less intelligence than a barbecued worm.

RE: NK just fired a missile against Japan

I'm not preaching about anything. I'm stating an opinion.

You obviously refuse to admit that the NK situation has been exacerbated by the comments made by the President of the USA, that together with the provocation of the war games held right in front of NK has created the situation we find ourselves in today.

South Korea needs protecting, and they have that protection from Japan and China, the last thing China wants is a war on their front door, the mass of refugees flooding into China from the North would be catastrophic for China.

You are part Asian, you know how important the ideology of not "Losing face" is held in Asia, especially East Asia. Trump is playing directly into Kim's hands by saying all he says, and refusing to back down and let this problem be handled by China, Russia et al.

Trump needs the diversion, he needs to look powerful, but at the cost of millions of lives, Trump and Kim are two peas in a pod, they care only about themselves and the power they hold and the power they want for the future, and neither have the astuteness, intelligence or diplomacy to hold such a position.

RE: NK just fired a missile against Japan

I have never said the USA is violating any arms agreement.

NK is like a bad-tempered child having a tantrum in a supermarket, like all children they are seeking attention, the more their mother scolds them the more they kick and scream throw things, break things. But if the mother walks away, the child calms down, starts to realise the world does not centre around them, and given time, they will seek out their mother, hold her hand and behave correctly.

In my analogy replace the child with NK and the mother as USA, now do you understand?

The USA has provoked NK and seems surprised at the result, yet in Asia most will tell you it was exactly as expected. You cannot deal with an Asian country using Western ideology.

You already know how toothless the UN is, indeed one of the few things we ever agreed about was the failure of that organisation. As for the USA, well War will divert attention away from Trump, and as we all know, all wars make the USA rich, they couldn't care less about the deaths they cause money is the only thing that matters to the already rich and greedy.

Donald Trump has been accused of fuelling hate crime

He is alienating the USA from all her Allies, whatever his motive or not, he needs the think before he posts.
Everything he does seems to divert attention away from himself, I believe that is his motive. He is hiding something and scared it will soon become public knowledge.
