RE: Women Approved for Combat

Nowadays, women take active rolls in all parts of the IDF
During the War of Independence in 1948, women were on full combat status and assumed important combat command positions. After the war, they were no longer allowed into combat positions. They continued as trainers and provided a valuable source of training manpower. From the late 1990s onwards, they are moving back into combat positions, including flight school. The first female fighter pilot graduated in 2001. Before women were re-absorbed into combat units, there used to be a womens' corps which provides professional support and backup that was created as a parallel administrative system to the command system. It was disbanded in 2001. In its place there is a female consultant to the chief of staff.

RE: FM104

i couldnt believe what I was hearing myself! My first thoughts were stop broadcasting it...but I honestly think the dj was afraid to do anything that would send the young lad over the edge......according to the commentcs under that article, he has been up on the bridge on a number of occasions........

RE: FM104

RE: FM104

I heard it......about an hour ago?...3 garda approached him on the bridge....he got v upset but his dad arrived about the same time and was beside him. The dad spoke to fm104....and the young lad stepped back onto the safe part of the bridge.....very very sad and distressing to listen to.....

RE: Fathers right march

Going to the family courts here is a woeful experience. The day i was there for my own separation, we were lucky enough to get a side room in which to negotiate a settlement. The majority of couples there had to make do with haggling out their arrangements on the benches in the main waiting area. Talk about a cattle market. My case took all day and finally, it went into the judge to be signed. As I sat at the back of the court room, I thought of what a pal had said...that this isnt what we thought would happen when we walked down the aisle or said "I Do" in front of a registrar.
For anyone heading there, I would advise both parties to bring a close pal along. They wont be allowed into the court room itself but its worth it to have a friendly supportive face there.
The system here is antiquated and badly in need of an overhaul. The laws are way out of touch with modern life in Ireland.
That old adage about "property being nine-tenths of the law" is unfortunately very true. On top of a distressed family, a broken relationship between mam and dad....and an uncertain future....we have to navigate a system that is adversarial..and even the best of couples will find themselves snarling before the end.
My point is that we need a route, away from the legal system....the latter can come on stream at the end, as a rubber stamp. We need a system that wold support families through this life changing crisis. Proper mediation would mean a couple being seen by a man and a woman as guides and counsellors.
Theres very little support out there and the legal eagles will only focus on the "POT" and how its to be divided up..and how much of a percentage they get. Sounds harsh but thats my experience......

So many couples are choosing not to get married and of course, the lack of rights for "unmarried" fathers has to be addressed. Its going to be an uphill struggle but we can learn from other countries, who are further down the road in this regard.

RE: How can we let this happen!

Disgusting vile comment!

RE: How can we let this happen!

My point exactly. The hospital say tuesday for the antibiotics...a full 48 hours after she was assessed by a doctor (early sunday) and told that as the neck of the womb was fully dilated, the baby would be lost..there was nothing that could be done to save it as it was too immature to survive outside the womb and theres nothing that can be done to reverse full dilation.
Back to the mother...her womb is now fully exposed to external infection. In a situation where a full term baby was being delivered, a woman would not be allowed to remain fully dilated for more than 12 hours without intervention.

RE: How can we let this happen!

Even going by the hospital timeline, it is outrageous to think that Savita was not given antibiotics by Sunday midnight, approaching twelve hours after a doctor declared that the neck of the womb was fully dilated (and theres no reversing that)...AND that she was left to "miscarry" for over three full days!

RE: Savita

Then direct your allegations at the journalist and dont use Savita's name!

RE: Savita

You misunderstand me. I am not saying that the constitution is not good enough. I am saying that the interpretation of how that is put into practice, in cases such as this, thats whats not good enough.

RE: Savita

well as weve heard in the various media over recent weeks, thats not good enough. After savitas death hit the headlines, we heard stories of women in similar siutaions as she was, where doctors did not delay. there needs to be at the very least ,clarification for medical personnel for these rare but life threatening situations. At the moment, it seems to be down to what part of the country the hospital is in.....and which doctor you get to treat you?

RE: Savita

So why isnt our gov jumping up and down and telling them to get lost then?

RE: Savita

SO you believe.....and thats why we have women heading off to our neighbour to excercise their right to live ,wihtout their mental or physical health being put into jeopardy.

Now if there was another referendum tomorrow, no doubt you will vote with your conscience, as will I. I am prepared to accept the outcome, the will of the people, are you?

RE: Savita

yeh thats what I'm thinking too...having listened to some of the mothers interviewed on radio, before the Savitha case. 53yrs on this earth, and five kids, I'm thinkin, if only these decisions could be so black and white...but theyre not. Life is many shades of grey.
Trealach is perfectly entitled to his opinion and beliefs on this matter.....as is everyone else who cares to share theirs here.

We do need clarifiaction on what exactly is the position here at this moment in time. Whilst we await the outcome of the various enquiries into Savithas death, I do belive that the lack of clarity and the fear of liability caused the unfortunate delay in treating Savitha in a timely fashion...which may have saved her life.
Hospital protocols for a labouring woman at full term will not leave her fully dilated for more than twelve hours...given the risk of infection.
Ive no doubt in my mind that Savita and her husband would have wished that the baby had been delivered as expected, within a matter of 5-6 hours..that they might have had time to say goodbye. Savita said to her husband "it was a girl, honey".
