I'm from Enniskillen, minime, and couldn't agree more with you. However, if you hike across Cuilcagh Mountain into Cavan where my mother is from, it is an equally spectacular place. My mother was one of ten kids born at the foot of a mountain the locals call Carraig na Madra, but has a different name on the map. There was Ben Bulben, Cuilcagh, and Carraig na Madra along with the Shannon Pot, streams to jump across, and rivers and lakes for fishing. From the top of Carraig na Madra, you can see small lakes on top of Ben Bulben. It was a giant playground for my brothers, sisters, and me during summer holidays in July. August was spent at the Gaeltacht in Loch an Iuir in Donegal; another spectacular place. Shur, isn't the whole country a spectacular place? After I finished my schooling, I went travelling and 34 countries later, and having lived and worked in 10, currently teaching at a university outside Phnom Penh in Cambodia, I have seen some magnificent places, but for me, Fermanagh will always be very special, followed very closely by Glangevlin in Cavan. I wouldn't want to live/visit there in the winter though; beautiful, but bleak.
Yes, The Maguire County is a beautiful place and I'm sure The Treaty County is, too.
I was born in one of the six in '59 and left in '80. Went travelling around the world and have been to 34 countries and lived and worked in nine. I will always love the people (both sides) and the country (all 32). It was a very formative upbringing and one that's impossible to forget. Getting married and settling down there was never for me, but I'm very proud of the country I come from. Being Irish opened up job opportunities for me in some countries.I see you're all locked down at the minute.Get the beer out and get the music on! Good luck to everyone.
I repeat, do not hand in your guns in NZ or anywhere else for that matter. When law and order breaks down, and it surely will, the newcomers of military fighting age will be mysteriously well tooled-up (think ISIS) in all western countries.
Grim days ahead, folks. Wake up for the sake of your children's and grandchildren's well-being and future.
The EU is a dictatorship. I'm Irish and support Brexit to the full. Irexit would be a great thing, too, and you'd know this if you researched the EU. It was never meant to be (we were led to believe)) a political/military union. It was for trade. Get out as soon as you can. It's nonsense. I'm open to having my mind changed, though.
Just want to know the opinions on here. I think they should and hope there is a serious debate in the Dail soon. The commissioners are unelected and make some huge decisions.
If anyone believes for a moment that China would allow N Korea to have the big bomb, its nonsense. China just wouldn't allow it to happen. They might be supplying them with longish range rockets to have a go at scaring the Japanese but they would not be carrying a nuclear tip on them. Never will.
I lived in Tokyo in '97; just up the road from the Chinese embassy. Every single day (M-F) during office hours, there was a white transit van outside the embassy with a huge speaker on top screaming anti- Chinese stuff at them. The same was true in Beijing for the Japanese embassy.
N Korea is one of those 7 countries (without a central banking system, funnily enough), that the Bush administration singled out for invasion. They started in Iraq, Afghanistan, then bombed Libya. Iran, Cuba, Sudan, and N Korea still to go.
BTW, China and the US are on the same team and the same page when it comes to globalisation. They do scratch each other's backs economically and militarily.
Hugely troubled times lie ahead for ordinary folk. The msm is still being believed by many.
It wasn't reported during the week that Trump and Putin reached a ceasefire agreement in Syria, which takes effect on the 30th July. It's not in their interests to praise Trump. Do some research, folks. They omit things that harm their agenda.
It's disappointing that some people here believe all of what they read and hear in the media.
Please do some research on this family. It's all at your fingertips. Start with cocaine smuggling in to a little airport in Arkinsas called Mena. Proceed from there. It's all true. You can't vote for her. You just can't.
I despair for America. The main stream media have done a job on the public. Anyone who says they wouldn't/didn't vote for Mr Sanders needs their head examined.
What is it with Americans and their utter disdain for socialism? I find it incredible that people living in dire poverty in the 'wealthiest' country in the world, will vote for Hillary Clinton. I'm lost for words on that one and the African Americans voting for her? No words on that one either.
Voting fraud and a myriad of murders are down to Hillary. You can read it all on the net.
My uncle in Cavan used to address me and my brothers as, "a hodgie."
Does anyone know the meaning or correct spelling? I suspect it means something like lad or young fella. TIA
