RE: Imagine what would be ...if we all stand up and say no...

This is a great example of ignorance, prejudice and small mindedness. Who should a foreign policy of a country effect? The people that it's directed at, i.e., citizens of other countries. And why not apply the same principles of jurisprudence to people overseas that are applied in American courts? Namely you're innocent until proven guilty.

Will you quit bashing illegal immigrants? Show me one study by a reputable organization that shows that illegal aliens cause a crime spike.

Again you don't speak for all Americans. Just speak for yourself so that the world does not confuse your ignorant rantings for how Americans think.

Welcome to the maze.

Kurt Vonnegut -- Dead at 84

Yes, I loved that story. I thought there might have been some Orwellian influence but Orwell is great in my books!

Kurt Vonnegut -- Dead at 84

Mr. plarkin,

Wolfe b. 1931. In my book that makes him old.

Kurt Vonnegut -- Dead at 84

Mr. Icarus,

Then why stop there. Let's include all moribund American novelists:

John Updike
Tom Wolfe
Salinger (b 1919 he's got to go any day)

Kurt Vonnegut -- Dead at 84

Fellow book lovers the novelist and critic Kurt Vonnegut is dead. Some of you may have read "Slaughterhouse-Five" as a high school reading assignment.

Once speaking of his own death he said: "God forbid should I ever die I'd like to have the epitaph that the beauty of music tells me that there's a God."

RIP

RE: saddam hussein his day has come

Well I was going by this comment:

"Checked on this information... Following organizations have something to do with this. Peoples Kifah (an Iraqi political organization) and Aljazeera (We all know who they are)."

And naturally I took the "we all know who they are" comment as negative. In any case my apologies if you thought I was being rude. Not my intention.

RE: saddam hussein his day has come

I can't see why people want to not accept the Iraqi civilian casualties? Don't they read the news or at least watch it on TV? Everyday almost a 100 people are killed and that's a direct result of our presence.

RE: saddam hussein his day has come

If their findings are so poorly spelled you'd have to wonder about their competence. Al Jazeera is a fine organization. It's the CNN of the Middle East so don't knock something that you know little about.

RE: saddam hussein his day has come

There's a big difference in intentions and capability. We went to war telling our respective populations that the world was in IMMINENT DANGER from Iraq's WMDs. The truth was that the UN regime of sanctions and inspections were working. George Bush and his cabal couldn't wait to rush into this war. Does anyone remember that idiot, Paul Wolfowitz (now the President of the World Bank -- God help us!), saying that we would be welcomed with open arms and that Iraq's oil revenue would be enough to rebuild the country with some left over for good measure?

Today we find out that one of the architect of the war, Richard Perelman says in hind sight the war was a disaster, especially the way it was conducted by our administration. And--this should come as no surprise--a former speech writer for Bush has said that the president made all those speeches without really comprehending their contents.

RE: CS Singalong...

When you're near?

RE: saddam hussein his day has come

I didn't see that quote but it's not difficult to comprehend. Blair is in denial about Iraq as in the war is going well; the war was justified; we had to act to save the world from Iraq's WMDs; we're doing the right thing; we'd do it all again if we had to.

RE: saddam hussein his day has come

If you think Bush is any less evil than Saddam Hussein checkout this site that lists Iraqi civilian casualties as a direct result of American military action:

I think wherever you propose Hussein's eternal punishment will be he's going to have Bush for company.

RE: saddam hussein his day has come

They're imposing a shoot-on-sight curfew in all the provinces of Iraq except Anbar province which is controlled by the insurgents. We have lost 10 soldiers so far this month and it's only the 4th. I wonder if George Bush will sleep soundly tonight.

RE: Family Values, Anyone...?

Republicans know that economically disadvantaged people tend to be religious. So they use religion to get people who should be voting democratic, to vote republican.

RE: new pics

Am I missing something here? You complained about it in the forums. Why shouldn't they reply in the forums?

Our Literary Heritage - 101

There so much poetry--thankfully in the public domain--that makes up our cultural and literary heritage. Here's one that everyone should know. It's by R.L.Stevenson and dates from the 19th century. It used to be popular as an epitaph:

Requiem

Under the wide and starry sky
Dig the grave and let me lie.
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.

This be the verse you grave for me:
Here he lies where he longed to be;
Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.

RE: smoking in public places

No smoking. I wouldn't stay in a place that allowed smoking. Happily Minneapolis, my hometown, wisely bans all smoking in public places, this includes bars and restaurants.

RE: baffeled

I am baffeled too.

RE: Why Dale Jr.?

Plarkin, you naughty boy!

RE: If you were shipwrecked on a distant island...

Good choices Brigitte and Plarkin. I would have to take something classical; something that gave me comfort as a child/teenager. It would have to include something by Dickens, either Great Expectations or A Tale of Two Cities. Then I would take that evergreen classic that I recommend everyone read at least yearly: Vanity Fair by Thackeray. My third choice would be a collection of short stories by Lorrie Moore: Birds of America.

P.S: We should be more practical and take books on survival and how to build a raft/boat!

RE: Norway is the # 1 Place to Live

I am mostly Norwegian, as are most of the people who live in Minnesota. I think you will find that Minnesota is one of the more egalitarian states in the Union. Want to start a discussion on Scandinavian writers? We could start with Ibsen. Your move!

A cyber book club

Anyone interested in joining a book club that would meet here in the forums? We could, like a traditional book club, select a book, read it, and then post our views. Let me know if there are other readers here and what everyone is currently reading.

RE: This annoys me to no end...!

In MN if you toss out a cigarette from your car and are observed by a police officer you can get a ticket worth several hundred dollars. This happened to a woman at work; she was almost in tears telling us about it. I just laughed and she hasn't spoken to me since!

RE: How do "you" spot a liar?

I've been reading the posts about lying and liars. This reminds me of a book that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in how to tell whether someone is lying to them or not.

The book is called: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;tag=connectingsin-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=tg/detail/-/0312204280/qid=1126504143/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1?v=glance%26s=books%26n=507846" target="_blank">Never Be Lied to Again; How to get the truth in 5 minutes or less in any conversation or situation</a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=connectingsin-20&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=1" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" />, by David J. Lieberman.

This book gives 46 clues to determining when a person is lying, and gives you tips and tricks for how to pull the truth out of anyone for any situation.

Enjoy!
