I'm a bit surprised that there appears to be an underground movement of people pretending to be Irish on here - I'm half expecting to bump into a bunch of Mancs and brummies whilst there !

Not just the Irish, anytime, but any travelling person or gypsy were called pikey - the word has been around since the mid 1800's, but more recently of course, it refers not specifically to travellers of whatever origin, but now mostly refers to any disreputable person, almost like " chav"

I have to say that my worst date was a few years ago ... she was ten years older than she said she was, still living with hubby (spare room, allegedly) even though she said she was divorced, living in a completely different town than she said, and spent the entire "date" planning wedding receptions and guest lists ...!! And that LAFF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Had people turning their heads to look .. more of a squark than a laugh ..!! That was a long two hours, I can tell you ...
I think that you have to be careful, and define what you mean by "travellers" ... Far as I can see there are two distinct groups - genuine travelling communities, and generally these people are quite pleasant and polite as has been said before ... But also there are the "tinkers" (for want of a better word) who in my experience will scam you and rip you off soon as look at you ( asphalt your drive? Fix your roof? Guttering looks a bit dodgy..etc ) ... these people will nick anything that is not nailed down, and half the stuff that is .... In my experience, that is ...
If you like your Metal, it HAS to be the groundbreaking innovative ( at the time) Yardbirds, with a young Jimmy Page.. Black Sabbath could be said to be the first "metal" band formed as such, as Zeppelin and Purple were originally blues based bands (all from the same part of the UK by the way),even Uriah Heap, but its close to call - end of 69 / early 70 there was a metal explosion ! Wow, you are kinda right about the parenting thing, but the point is that these parents are the ones brought up in the eighties, when the liberal do-gooders had the run of the mill (teachers cant punish kids physically, parents cant punish kids physically and so on..) and we are now reaping the benefits.:
kids grew up knowing that whatever they did they would not be punished, and therefore respect for others / elders etc dwindled --- but these kids in the eighties and nineties are now the parents of todays looters, and basically they cant be ar*ed: Far as they are concerned, the world owes them a living, sky tv and endless benefits, so its always someone elses problem, never theirs ...
So its a waste of time talking about "the parents", as the parents of these kids dont give a toss !

sorry but ..... Water cannon would have been mostly useless this last few days - they are best used against a fairly static large mob who are threatening a building / line of police and so on -- what has happened in the last few days (certainly outside of the Tottenham riot) has been small very mobile groups of thugs / scum / pondlife etc moving from shop to shop = not so easy to keep following them with an 8 ton water canon truck ........
So while Cameron sounds tough talking about authorising its use, it typically wont actually change a thing . More police on the streets is what we want / need --- and how long have we been saying that ??!
