The Scare

I got the call
Call me said Shane
The next morning I got another call
Your Dad is in the hospital
No explanation of what was wrong with him
I called the hospital to find his room number
Found him in bed and Mom waiting with him
He had a seizure
He can't drive for six months
I ate an omelet Mom made with ham and toast
I watched the Packers beat the Cowboys with Dad
It was the first meal I had eaten alone with them in years
I felt bad
Bad for all the meals I had missed because of bad words
I got some homemade salsa from them
I got a scare
But I got some time I wouldn't have had otherwise
Time with my Dad

IED

IED
Improvised
Explosive
Device
Hundreds of thousands of soldiers come back
Scarred by these devices
Some show their scars
Like the man who took my money at the hockey game
Making change with one hand and a stump on the other arm
Many more suffer the mental scars unseen
Anxiety, depression, dark memories, nightmares
Recovery comes in many forms
Making masks to show their true faces
The ones that hide in their minds
Climbing mountains is another way
Princess Diana fought against these bombs
Many millions still lie in wait in countries all over the world
Landmines from the Vietnam War and others
Improvised Explosive Devices

About this poem:
I was reading an article in my latest National Geographic about the soldiers making masks as a part of their therapy and recovery from injuries to their brains from the shock waves created by these IEDs.

Night At The Movie Theater

Stand in line
Get my ticket
Wait in another line
Get my water
It's cheaper than pop
1.75 vs 4.50
And I don't have to miss the movie to go to the bathroom
Plus I save about 1100 calories on refills
Beefsticks, soft serve ice cream, chocolate covered pretzels
Miss the mini tubs of icecream, Moose Tracks was my favorite
Grab some napkins
Wait for the movie
See a local ad on suicide prevention from Iowa County high schoolers
Same county I work in
Same night I saw Robin Williams in Night at the Museum
Get some prezel bites with cheese later
Discover a big cheese stain on my shirt
Got the shirt from Bubba Gump Shimp at the Mall of America
Play some pinball
Win one game
Drive to Walmart to kill some time from 8:45 to about 9:10
Drive home
Still need to put the movie stub in my scrap book
I use old calendars for my scrap booking

About this poem:
Just brainstorming some ideas that would make my world and the world a better place. If I had to pick one I would pick #14. I see too many good people working too hard for too little. If a worker in China was paid 10 bucks a hour plus overtime pay, they would be making over 100,000 a year. I think they would rather work 40 hours a week, and have their time with their family.

Things That Happened In 2014

I passed out unconscious at the library and hit my head
Cause I worked 300 days at a factory I dread
Saw the Twins play baseball
Spent a lot of time window shopping at the Kennedy Mall
Bought a 2000 Cavalier paid in cash
Had a friend mad at me for selling the other I thought was trash
Juggled on the Badger Camp Telethon
Couldn't do Jump Around and Gangster's Paradise I had my heart set on
So I did Arthur's Theme and Rubberband Man
Felt like I was juggling for the man
Celebrated Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas at my Mom's
Felt fearful while I waited for the verbal bombs
Yellow Flicker Beat by Lorde was my favorite song
Got tired of all the Ferguson crap
Can't we all just get along?
Made some food, ate a lot of fast food from the Walmart Mall
My last creation was a cheese ball

Fame

Look at me!
Look at me!
Tell me you're happy what you see!
I was on your tv
I was on your computer
Dream about me as your suitor
Buy my music
Buy my dvd
Let me fill your world with glee
It will make you so happy
Just pay attention to me
Give me positive praise
Then my ego will be raised
Talk about me to your friends
Come to my concerts now and then
Ask me for my autograph
Afterwords we can talk and laugh
Tell me about the funny scene from that movie you saw me in
I don't get tired of hearing about it again and again
The truth is I love it when you talk about me
It's the one thing that fills me with glee
And let's not forget about all the money!

Twas The Night Before Christmas (Jail Version)

Twas the night before Christmas
And all through the jail
Lots of creatures were stirring
Even a vengeful inmate with a nail
The toilet paper was hung by the communal toilet without care
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there
The prisoners were nustled unsafe in their beds
While visions of freedom danced in their heads
And I in my orange prison uniform and the guard in her cap
Wished we could settle down for a long winter's nap
When up from the roof there arose such a clatter
The prison guard sprang from her chair to see what was the matter
I knew that someone was up on that roof so lively and quick
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick
And then in the twinkling I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each tiny hoof
Then when I felt all would be well
In St. Nicholson came into our cell
He spoke a few words and went straight to his work
Then he exclaimed like a jerk
Deadbeat dads who make kids cry
Bad check writers who steal and lie
Drunk drivers who maim and make people fret
You all deserve the baloney sandwich you're going to get
But I come here to give you more than words
I also give you my Christmas turds
Then he laid a finger aside of his nose
And majically a chimney arose
Up he went and I heard him exclaim as he faded from sight
Merry Christmas to everyone else and I wish them all well
But as for you
You can all go to hell!

About this poem:
We have the largest prison population in the world. Most of the people in prison don't deserve to be there, but a few do. It seems that we reward bad behavior and punish good behavior in this country. I just think it would be nice to have the truly bad ones get a good scolding from Ol St. Nick.

Distractions

All the news talks about is the cops killing black people
The commercials selling pills that poison
Drones flying overhead
The weight loss diets
Cell phones
Endless gadgets that require vast amounts of money to maintain
distractions from peace
distractions from our connections to others
distractions from our connection to God
distractions from our connection to nature
Time we will never get back
Time to rest
Materialism
The cult of it's not important how you feel, but how you look
Lies told to scare
Lies told to make obedient consumers of us
Consumers of worthless crap

About this poem:
Just thinking of all the things that the media pumps us with that really is just propaganda. We need to spend more time getting right with ourselves and each other, than hitting the malls for the latest gadget.

Presents

What would I want to have if there were no limits on me?
Santa would have a majic sack to give them all for free
A new porsche would be great
Along with a daily meal of steak
A round of golf anywhere on the planet each week
My own jet that would be sleek
A end to any kind of work
No more hanging out with a boss for a jerk
Skiing in Switzerland would be nice
Having my own studio where I could carve some ice
Friends to play video games with me
They would even want to go ski
A girlfriend who is nice and hot
She would be excited to get what I've got
Peace, love, and joy would be my daily feeling
Away from me hate, jealous, and fear that keeps me reeling
Lonliness would be a thing of the past
As well as perfect teeth that would last and last
The ability to eat anything without consequence
The desire to live free and take a chance
The ability to dance any dance
An endless supply of money
And a woman to wake me up by saying "I Love You Honey!"

The list is endless. I got a newspaper on Thanksgiving and it weighed five pounds. Advertisements for an endless shopping list of great deals. The only thing that left me feeling empty, besides the materialism, was having people work on Thanksgiving.

Thoughts on Ferguson

Michael Brown got shot
This debate on police violence has been hot
Was Michael in the wrong?
It seems somewhere before I've heard this same song
Ice T talked about it in Cop Killer long ago
There is something these police need to know
The airport screening, the drones
These freedom stealing measures make us feel more alone
Like no one cares for our welfare
Just doesn't seem very fair
The cameras, the unnecessary searches
Make the gate way arches shadows menacing lurches
Fear and untrust creep in
Where will it all end?

About this poem:
The cop who shot Michael Brown resigned because he thought it would calm the violence that has erupted out of this tragedy. He still hasn't been brought to trial. Seems cops can kill anyone they want because it's really about the state mattering more than the people.
