What in the World

What in the world would I do without you
By my side, right where you belong?
What would I do if I reached for your love;
And all that I reached for was gone
I’d try to be strong and keep moving along
But I think I would just want to hide
I’d wave and I’d smile and I’d stay for a while
But there would be nothing inside

All I could ask is to have you to hold
In my arms in my dreams in my life
All I could want is to know that you want
To stay here, be my woman my wife
I’ll love you through time and I’ll know that you’re mine,
And you’ll always be first in my heart
You’ll know that I love you and put no one above you,
And nothing could tear us apart.

This is the way that I feel and I know
That true love will not fade away
I’ll keep you beside me and hold you inside me
And we’ll take it day by day

What in the world would I do without you
By my side, right where you belong?
What would I do if I reached for your love;
And all that I reached for was gone
I’d try to be strong and keep moving along
But I think I would just want to hide
I’d wave and I’d smile and I’d stay for a while
But there would be nothing inside

What in the world, what in the world
What in the world would I do?
What in the world, what in the world
What in the world would I do?

About this poem:
My favorite of the songs I've written. This was written expressly for my late wife when she was still alive. Didn't intend for it to be prophetic.

Twice the Man

I traveled around the world
A couple of years ago
When I was young and wild
And I needed time to grow

I met a fair young woman,
Whose face was like a song;
But the verses soon grew strained
And the magic quickly gone

Chorus
I know that I am twice the man
My father thought I’d be
I hope that I am half the man
You think that you can see

You seem to think I’m someone strong
And well upon the way
I pray that you’re not too far wrong
And love me anyway

Bridge
All that I know is that I want you
Here with me tonight
I know that this feeling is right
Tell me you love me and
Want me here with you
Say that you’re ready to
Feel a love that is true

I’m not a handsome gentleman
All polished and refined
But you’ll find that I’m a gentle man
With loving on my mind

Wishful Thinking

Don't you think it would be grand
To own a little plot of land
And thereupon to build a home
With gardens in the sandy loam
And lots of trees, and good sharp axes
And someone else to pay the taxes!

Fairy Dance

Come my lads and sit a while beneath the glowing moon
And if you’re sitting still enough, you’ll hear a mournful tune
’Twas in this place some years ago, a lady and her man
Who felt a witching power, and beheld a fairy band

They marched out from yon grove of trees, with faces long and glum
And played an ancient tune upon their whistles and their drums
The sound it billowed louder then, and grew upon the breeze
With tiny wisps of Tule fog encircling the trees

The two were frozen in their place, they could not move at all
And as they watched, the grove of trees became a misty hall
The band marched on and played their tune, and paid them ne’er a glance
But their feet they started twitching as if they longed to dance

Chorus
And the band circled round
And the piper called the tune
While the couple danced without a sound
It ended all too soon

They told no one what they had seen; nor where they thought they’d gone
For they knew no one would understand the power of that song
Instead they slipped away one night, when the moon was full and round
And they went off a-looking for that magic fairy sound

But no one’s ever seen them since, they disappeared that night
And all that people knew was that something wasn’t right
For if they sit alone at night when the moon is full and round
They start to think they might have heard a mournful fairy sound

About this poem:
This song popped into my poor unsuspecting head one night, fully formed with music and everything. I don't know where stuff like this comes from, but I am glad it does.

Waiting...

I was waiting for my time to come, to rest my weary head
And looked upon the things I’ve done, and never looked ahead
To times to come, when days are done, when we lie alone in bed
What does it mean, this life alone, when all is done and said.

Internet Girl

I want a girl from an internet site
I don’t really know her, but her profile is right
We could go out eventually
I wrote to them, but they won’t write to me

I wrote to one who had beautiful hair
Her eyes were blue and her skin was fair
I said we could go out, have a coffee and snack
I waited for days, but she never wrote back

There was one that I found who seemed perfect for me
She liked the same music, same shows on TV
I wrote her a letter, asked for a reply
She never wrote and I never knew why

I decided to find what my profile lacked
To cause all these women to never write back
I found that I’d written my ZIP code wrong
The girls I wrote to live in Hong Kong

Meant to Be

Walking around in the park,
Won’t be long until dark
Thinking about all the times that we had
Wishing things hadn’t turned bad

All those things we did together
Things that we could have done better
Pictures of you that I took at the beach
Now it seems as though you’re out of reach

Won’t you come back to me?
I know this is something meant to be

Look at your number up on my wall
Thinking that maybe I’ll give you a call
Asking if you could see me tonight
Hoping that maybe it would be right

Now that I’m sitting here with you
I’m not really sure what I should do
Searching for something that I could say
Words that would make you want to stay

Lovin' From You

I want all my lovin' from you
There's nobody else that would do
I promise I'll always be true
For me, there's nobody else but you.

I’ve known you for so very long
There's no way that we could go wrong
That's why I'm writing this song
Because it's with you I belong

(bridge)
And if you start feelin' lonely
I'll sit and talk with you a while
And if you'll be my one and only
I promise I will make you smile
Just like a happy child...

Cold Dark Night

A pale crescent moon hung low in the sky; though the lake fairly glittered with light
Her eyes shone bright as leaves skittered by with the wind on a cold dark night

An owl swept by on its endless quest and her breath blew frost in the cold
As she waited for something to give her rest from a story that’s never been told

Chorus
And he sat alone in a quiet cell while he thought of what to do
With a looking glass and an old sea shell to make his dreams come true

Morning came softly as the moon sinks from sight, And the shadows hide from the light
He crossed the field over, and found her there with shadows of moonlight dancing through her hair
(Chorus, last line twice")

About this poem:
I joined a songwriters group once, the first night we were given a short assignment to write a song including the lines "cold dark night" and "pale crescent moon". We were supposed to write one verse, but I wrote this out on the spot. Didn't even know I could do that.

Dragon Poems

Morning

Soaring far above the trees
Quicker than the eye can see
On wings of crimson, gold or green
A flight of creatures rarely seen

Bold before the morning sun
Earth-bound fauna freely run
Unaware of danger nigh
Circling down from morning skies

All is clear from where they stand
There is no movement on the land
And so they stop, to catch their breath
And one of them to meet his death

Suddenly a talon’s grasp
Brings a young buck’s final gasp
The others scatter and take to heel
As a dragon has its morning meal

Lunch

The tell-tale flash of colors bright
Tells a tale not often heard
Rushing down from unseen heights
Faster than a hunting bird

Frozen mornings warmed to noon
Shadows hide from suns swift rise
Mid-day should be coming soon
Bringing light to tired eyes

Wandering past a quiet stream
A mountain goat surveys the field
And wonders what the colors mean
Not knowing that his fate is sealed

One gem-toned speck has moved around
Reflected in a pool of water
And circled, oh so slowly down
Preparing for a lunch-time slaughter

Talons sink into his back
Teeth crunch through his spine
A goat is quite a tasty snack
For the dragon’s hungry kind

Dinner

Evening falls and shadows lengthen
Darkness starts to spread its wing
Windows light where smoke trails strengthen
And frogs begin their nightly sing

Far from house and farm and field
Across a river, running slow
A meadow with a gate is sealed
And fated cattle start to low

Soon a colored mote appears
Descending surely as the sun
A cow’s last cry that no one hears
The dragon’s dinner has begun

I wrote this set of poems after writing a set of children's stories about friendly, or at least non-hostile dragons. I felt I needed to get in touch with a dragon's real nature.

Christmas Star

In Bethlehem on Christmas Eve there shone a mighty star
To guide the three majestic kings who traveled from afar
The object of their searching was a child born that night
Whose birth in a dreary manger stall belied his holy light

And now on Christmas Day we’ve come to celebrate His birth
And give our thanks to what He’s wrought upon this planet Earth
So join our merry band this day, and sing a cheerful song
That we may rest our hearts and souls, and perhaps to sing along

The Internet is Down

The internet seems to have gone away
The smoke is gone and the mirrors are broke
Looks like it’s going to be one of those days
Our system is kind of a joke

It was working today for an hour or three
When a student came asking for help with his work
I tried to download the file (it’s free)
But I couldn’t, and felt like a jerk

The network admin isn’t answering his calls
He is probably tearing his hair out by now
I don’t think I want to see him at all
He’s probably having a cow

The people are starting to rise up in arms
They’ve called for his head in a sack
I don’t think they really would do him harm
But I hope someone’s watching his back

The day is all sunny, the sky is quite blue
A gorgeous autumn day
I hope that he knows what he needs to do
And gets it all done right away
