I remember the wringer used to break buttons and sometimes the clothing got tangled in the wringer.... there was also a large 'copper pot' in the corner of the laundry that needed a wood fire lit under it to heat the water....
Mum had a 1 metre long flat stick that she used to move boiling hot (white) sheets from the pot to the concrete sink, she used the same stick to threaten us if we got out of line..... Mum has long passed away but I still have that stick as a momento....

Clothing material was a lot more heavy-duty back then, synthetic clothes these days would fall apart on a ripple board in three washes.....
