I used the following similar recipe for my children's novelty birthday cakes when they were younger. The icing is easy to spread and pipe. If you haven't got a piper, just use folded over lunch wrap or a paper bag manoeuvered into the shape of a cone. Snip tip of cone off with scissors and fill opening with icing. Pipe away.

This basic buttercream icing is very versatile and easily flavoured.

Ingredients
100 g butter softened
1 1/2 cups icing sugar
2-3 drops vanilla essence
1-2 Tbsp milk
Instructions
Beat the butter until it is pale and fluffy.

Sift in the icing sugar, add the vanilla essence and milk, and mix until you have a light, fluffy mixture. Add extra milk if you need a softer consistency.

Spread or pipe icing over cupcakes, and top with decorations as desired.

Recipe Notes
Allow the icing to set before serving. And, as with our Basic Cupcakes Recipe, you can try flavouring your icing to suit your tastebuds.

I would highly recommend Stephanie Jaworski, Joyofbaking.com recipes All her recipes I have tried are highly accurate. I have made her Chiffon Cake which is divine, light, airy, and fluffy. To make a light icing, yes, I would go with the cream, esp if you are trying to avoid too much sugar. See her frosting here for her Chiffon Cake, and then take a look at similar recipes you intend to make to find a suitable icing/frosting to match.

If you want to make it nice b fluffy, instead of using yogurt, try already made Dream Whip or a whipoed mixture and use a beater, not a Whisk, unless you have no choice lol make your frosting as sweet as tou want n the whipped mixture will even it all out n has the most incredible taste together, just use half icing n half whipped n it might even taste better to add the whipped to very sweet icing.
