The dorm had bunk beds... bugga that... I am not sleeping up above... have not done that for years...

Friends of mine stayed in a place very reasonable and only a short walk to the city. And very close to Bridge Street, the 'other' fashion centre of Melbourne. Will have a look tomorrow when in there to get details.
St Kilda is something else. Has nightlife (of many different kinds), the Paladeum Theatre, Luna Park and a decent walk out into the Bay, Sunday craft markets, and the ferry ride over to Williamstown markets on a Sunday. And good for a "gay old time." There are trams and a light rail into the city.
But would not advise walking back from a night out in the city. Lot of 'empty' space along the way.
