Here in Ka-boing, we have a guitarist named Dan Leap! No joke! Last I heard, he was running for some political office. Me, I'm running for the nearest pond! Ribbit-t-t (SPLASH)

I would suggest that if anyone wants to find the greatest guitarist of them all, try looking at the YouTube videos of Sungha Jung. I didn't think anyone would ever surpass Chet Atkins, Fernando Sor, Carlos Montoya, et al, but this kid from Korea is definitely the best ever! I say this because not only do I play, but because I listen to ALL styles of music, not just one or two and say it is everything. There is more to music than just Rock, Jazz, Country, Blues and Folk. Try some Raga, Ska,Polka, Salsa, Horta, etc.,THEN tell us you "listen to it all". Then, let's all leave opinion aside and deal in facts only.

I know not many people have heard of him - but to add an historical perspective - I would have added Robert Johnson. In addition, my 'favorite' list would include BB King, Joe Satriani, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughn...

FACT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Steve Earle,Tommy Emmanuel and Van Halan, what a mix. Add Hendrix, BB King to any list as well. And probably a much under rated player was George Harrison. His late Beatles and post Beatles showed that he had a talent. But these are only the more popular guitarists. Queen could deliver the sweetest tunes coming off electric guitars. But I seem to remember something about an Hawaiian dude who could make his instrument sing, forgotten his name because it was something like 40 years ago.
But there are many many more non-pop guitarists out there who can perform solo. Even Neil Diamond can give soul to his instrument.
Who makes any top 10 list depends largely on your taste in music and whether you talk about amplified and much altered electric guitars or those who can really play the instrument without the who-ha attached. Tommy Emmanuel is very talented in both, although not on my favourite lists to listen to for an hour or 2. Give me George Harrison or Steve Earle for variety. And probably a little known Russian guy (forget his name now. )who played at the Sydney Musicians Club often on a Friday night in the late 70's

I pretty much agree with you, but there is one person here I do not think was listed and I do not know his name. He played for Grand Funk Railroad. He was a bass player for that band. In my opinnion he was the best bass player there ever was. He hand a sound all of his own.

Hey! you left out my son! He's not famous, but one 'smokin' guitarist! I used to have to keep a fire-extinguisher handy before he left home. Also, what about Frank Marino? He still plays gigs, as my X is his lighting tech & tours with him. Even tho I'm a chick, I've played guitar for 43 years, so I ken a wee about guitarists. But, I agree that guitarist preference is subjective & you stated nae criteria for our choices.
My original post does state that it is just my opinion as you say everyone has personal preferences regarding genre of music and technique etc.Yes I have heard plenty of Jeff Beck as some of my fellow musos are fans of his,I just dont enjoy his playing as much as others. There are many other fine guitarists who I do enjoy, including Warren Curriculo(of Frank Zappa fame),Tommy and Phil Emmanuel,BB King,Steve Stevens,Stevie Ray Vaughan,Hendrix,Eddie Van Halen, however it is just a top 10 list and those listed are my favourites.

And let's not also forget to mention *Alvin Lee*.
In my most humble opinion, of course.

However...We must all remember that taste is an individual thing. So therefore, what one person likes is a personal choice based on his/her criteria and preferences.
Music, especially so!
As a rule, we should prefix our "Top Ten" with MY.
