More About my Match

No man is an island,” said John Donne. Everyone is connected to someone else, whether it is by family, friendship, or in this case the admiration of a great person whom one wishes to be like.
This is true for sportspeople, and cricketers as well, perhaps especially so. Virat Kohli worshipped Sachin Tendulkar, and that helped him be the batsman he is today. Now Kohli himself is out there, leading the team and inspiring youngsters to take up the bat and emulate his competitive, aggressive yet sporting attitude towards games.
There is no one as inspiring as the cricketers we witness in our youth.
In the India finals of Red Bull Campus Cricket, we had over 100 youths who play cricket. From the 15 matches that were played, 10 players won the Man of the Match award at least once. We asked all of them who their idols were.
From Day 1, the opening match was between Delhi and Lucknow. Delhi captain Deepak Khatri (pictured above) was Man of the Match for his score of 106* from 57 balls, the highest individual score of the tournament. Deepak went on to score another century in the Day 2 match against Mumbai. To no one’s surprise, he was the top scorer of the national finals with 277 runs from 4 innings. Even more unsurprisingly, his idol is Virat Kohli, also from Delhi, also a prolific scorer of T20 centuries this year.
Mumbai’s Aditya Dhumal was also Man of the Match for 2 matches, against Hyderabad and Lucknow. Predominantly a spinner, Aditya ended the tournament with the most wickets – 12 – and contributed vital runs lower down the order. He wants to be like Yuvraj Singh, India’s beloved all-rounder and Man of the Tournament in their victorious 2011 World Cup campaign.
