Hi all!

I have met different people from different countries and they have amazing myths about Africa. If you have never been to Africa, what do you perceive Africa to be like. How would you prepare yourself to come to Africa for the first time?

everyone has new york on the top of their list of places to go... but new york is not all that, i have been there twice. too crowded, people are rude, you have to walk everywhere, and many other things.

well anyways back to the topiclaugh my best friend is african and i went to nigeria with her last year and it was beautiful. people were not naked on the streets with animals or any other crazy stuff seen on tv about africa. it was very much like america, houses, malls, mcdonalds, and stuff like that...and the weather is very nice and warm.

I keep on asking myself: why do media keep on showing the bad side only, what is their interest?
I've been realising that there is a straight relationship between media and politicians. They are actually the tirans who want to blessed for being "kind" to Africa, they want to be called, recognised by their people as being very benevolent, full of compassion towards those poor animals- africans. What they do with their images and laws is to elevate western pride as being the best place to be. So many wonderful places in the world where you can live comfortably well. It's all about projecting Europe, America as the greatest places to be, when it all depends on what you are looking for!
They project all Africa of being a mess when it's not true...why do they do this? This of course results in some tensions when africans choose to live in their territories! Yes, there are africans who are not at all running away of war, poverty or else, people like me, that financially with be perhaps even better in their own countries...but again, it all depends on what you are looking for!

I say, well, i've never seen "my" Africa on TV...and that's sad, because if i come across with close minded people...there is a great shock because i can't be as exotic as they want me to be or they saw in National Geographic, which makes things turn the otherway around- who is being animal here by not accepting that common sense can really mediate relationships between different cultures?

It's like things are getting worse in Africa, this is how i see the projection...not true!

ONU said my country was maybe one of the poorest countries in the world...might be, but i truelly know others than are definitely behind mine and they were placed far above mine! This is what? Even statistics can be tendencious...why all that?

Those children crying, very thiny with flies all over them don't exist in my country! People then talk about the time of war...yeah, those images are natural in a country of war.

My country has been free for 16 years now, so many things improved. Why still talk about the time of war?
My country was a communist, but for 16 years it is striving to keep democracy and i can assure you that it is doing better than some countries from Eat Europe. We are really pro-development and people even say that we can give our ass to achieve development! So, there has been this willing and strive to move on positivelly...

Spent time in Sudan near Khatoum in my friends village when he was married...
The innate beauty of Africa and its people will be forever encarved in my heart. I felt myself change, ever so slightly but a shift did happen and now I feel so blessed to have shared such magic in a wonderful country...In time I think it would be best described as becoming 'one' with a land that has the most amazing contrast both georgraphically and spiritually....

I think the problem with communication lies with the difference in suburban and city living...One has more time to spend time 'chatting' and sometimes the city is overwhelming for those that are not used to the differences....I have been city based most of my life, Paris, milan, Rome, Cairo, Riyadh etc. and sometimes my 'ways' offends people...but in saying that I do take the time to try and remember that common courtesy is not dead.

Kenya is a beautiful place and yes we are developed....we have malls, schools, dress in 'real' clothes, live in real houses ( yes, we don't all live in slums) and we even have exotic resaurants.

Too bad the odingas, obamas, oukos and omollos ( luo tribe) took us 500 yrs back with all the tribalism, looting and killings.

sad flower barfing

I wish we only spoke one language in Kenya instead of the hundreds of crappy languages making others feel 'left out' ( yeah right!) and making them kill. Actually no, i wish we didn't have the one 'tribe' causing all this sh%%!!!

sigh frustrated frustrated

One tribe out of hundreds causing strife!!!!

Sorry for venting! I'm really sad about the crap happening in what was a peaceful nation two months ago, a country that gave home to refugees of war torn nations is now in an almost similar state!!!

Whether there was rigging or not, who kills their neighbour because they speak the same language as the reigning president????

PRIMITIVE!!!!

oh Defiantly! "Excuse me" never leaves the lexicon, it's just adapts a little. Reminds me scene from Crocodile Dundee, a perfect description of how a country folks "feel" in a big city.
Nothing is more lonely then to be in New York at rush hour.

Sad isn't it to feel so alone in a city full of so many people...yet alone in the desert one can feel totally at peace..
Kinda like when I was married, loneliest place in my bed at night yet now that I don't share the sheets I am so at peace...

It's a state of mind. The city can be the biggest inspiration and a saddest curse. Just like that glass... half full or half empty smile
I was born in Moscow ... I miss the big city ...

Yes I know what you mean...I sometimes wake up either feeling lucky or cursed but to me the city is always something I feel a parallel and affinity towards...I love to step onto the sidewalk and be swept up in a sea of people forever moving and rushing towards nothing...
Yes I was born in Norway and as much as I love Australia...it is not my home, culture or history...I sometimes see things I am attracted to and realise that they are reminders to me of a place I miss....

You express your self in a beautiful way ... done any writing professionally?
Most people have a connection or drive toward one place or another. Russians have that connection with motherland that never goes away. I've noticed it's somewhat different for women...

No I don't write but I am an artist so painting is my words and my muse.....
The connection to my homeland is strong...actually it has increased since I have aged and become more 'settled' in other ways...My parents live here too but my mother never spoke english for thirteen years...and still has a pigs' head or eels cooking in a huge pot everytime I venture home...lol...no wonder the kids at school never swapped sandwiches with me!
The first time I returned to Norway and Romania..(my mother is from there)....it was as if I had never left...everything made sense for once in a longtime..perhaps our culture runs deeper in our blood than we realise?
P.S...Vodka is my fav drink!!!

perhaps ... I regretfully doubt that it's genetic .. would be nice though smile
I grew up there so nostalgia is like a rusty nail, aches deep with in my heart. The more time passes the stronger it gets. Just recently I've started relearning Russian. I never even learned how to type. Granted when I left internet was in it's infancy... Now I have to translate words back to my native language! I can't even express my self properly in writing. Assimilating is one thing but I feel I've giving up to much.

i am not expecting people to say excuse me everytime they bump into me...and i never said that they were being rude by bumping into me. they could have been rude for other reasons...so u need to make sure you fully read what has been written before you comment!

i know i havn't stayed there long enough and i dont plan on doing that. my experience there was obviously different from yours....direct, opinionated or whatever you want to call it, i still think they're rude.blah blah blah

There's something romantic about Africa. Throughout history, its people, its tragedies, its beauty and its wonders have caused outsiders to romanticize the continent. When Western explorers documented their first steps and journeys onto the shores of the African continent in the late 1800s, Americans read with wonder and intrigue about an untouched place of people, animals and land that exceeded the imagination.

Even today, National Geographic captures stories of people who are exotic and beautiful. Travelers, photographers and wanderers have dreamed of visiting places that are contrary to and seemingly far removed from a Western lifestyle.

Africa is green, warm, and still has strong moral values any person on this earth would admire!
