A gunman who wanted to shoot fans at this week's Super Bowl match got within sight of the stadium with an assault-style rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition, US authorities say.

Kurt William Havelock had vowed to "shed the blood of the innocent" in a manifesto mailed to media outlets on Sunday, authorities revealed.

"No one destroys my dream," he wrote.

Havelock had wanted to set up a bar and was angry because he'd been denied a liquor licence, authorities said.

He was armed with an AR-15 assault-style rifle when he reached a parking lot near the University of Phoenix Stadium on Sunday, where pre-game activities for the NFL football championship game were underway.

"He waited about a minute and decided he couldn't do this," FBI agent Philip Thorlin told a detention hearing for Havelock earlier this week.

Havelock's father testified that his son then called his fiancee and met his parents at his home in suburban Phoenix.

"He was very upset; he was sobbing hysterically," Frank Havelock said.

"He said 'I've done something terribly, terribly wrong'."

The 35-year-old has been charged with mailing threatening communications. He is being held without bail.

The FBI said Havelock had planned to attack Super Bowl fans at the stadium in what he called an "econo-political confrontation".

"I will not be bullied by the financial institutions and their puppet politicians," Havelock wrote in his eight-page manifesto.

"I will test the theory that bullets speak louder than words. Perhaps the blood of the inculpable will cause a paradigm shift ... someone has to start the revolution but no one wants to be first."

"twinky" defense n. a claim by a criminal defendant of that at the time of the crime he/she was of diminished mental capacity due to intake of too much sugar as from eating "Twinkies," sugar-rich cupcakes. The defense was argued successfully by a psychiatrist for the defendant in the notorious case of former San Francisco County Supervisor Dan White who shot and killed San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and County Supervisor Harvey Milk, resulting in White's conviction for only manslaughter instead of murder.

what are we supposed to teach our kids when a**hole like this decide his rights supercede 6 peoples rights to live.Those 6 people had families..my first thought would not be to kill but to go thru legal channels and if that didn't work,move.What did this mans actions solve or prove?That if you get mad the next logical step is to kill?Sorry I'm all for the people but killing isnt' part of the democratic process.this world is a f!@#king mess.
