More About Me

Early on, I started writing journals, though nothing like the 160 I later wrote during 40 years, starting at age of 19 when I met my first husband who gave me the complete set of the journals of Anaîs Nin, whom he had known in Paris. From there, it was the complete journals of Virginia Woolf. Because he spent considerable time as an architect in Paris and loved Parisian cooking, I became very good at that. I I always excelled in English (and French, having taken 8 years of it in elementary/high school.)

Originally, I was going to major in French and Education, since I was six years old and just beginning to learn French. However, my love of English, especially writing got in the way in college. My top writing teacher got me to send a paper into The Atlantic contest, and once after sending something to The Globe, I had the possible offer of a job if I wanted to move to Boston. I got my creative writing work during my M. A. degree (along with Linguistics/E.S.L.) I had applied and been accepted for the MFA at Bowling Green State University in Ohio with a teaching fellowship, but I determined to stay in Pittsburgh, where I was very happy at the University of Pittsburgh.

That is where I completed the first volume of my tetralogy LION MOUNTAIN, Approach to Freetown, as my Master’s Thesis, which was very well received by my committee and probably the reason I was admitted to The Creative Writing Program at the University of Denver, one of the twelve best graduate writing programs in the country at that time. I could not find reasonable work, and although I was promised another scholarship and a library job, I chose to move on to Bowling Green where I would be able to teach, and I did. I was able to conclude my studies of 20th century British fiction there, writing Volume III. of the tetralogy, Incident in Bo, my creative dissertation, as well as a 400 page book on six 20th century British poets.

Occupation

Not only have I earned all three writing degrees (in journalism and creative writing), but I have also taught English for over 30 years, chiefly at the University level. I am a certified teacher of English, English as a Second Language, and French.
