Being in prison, you don't get to see very much
of nature. But when we do get to go outside, I
drink in everything I can see, and I appreciate
it alot more than I suppose I would if it was a
common thing. I get a great deal of joy in
watching the birds fly and the insects buzz around.
This summer, I was outside exercising in the yard,
and something further out caught my eye. At first,
I thought it was a big mosquito or something. Then
to my great delight, I realized that it was one
of those hummingbirds, poking his beak into some
kind of wildflower. It was like for a moment there,
I could almost feel the joy of this bird and its
freedom as it hovered around those flowers. I
really appreciated seeing this so much.
Later on, when I was outside again, I looked over
in the same area, hoping to see another hummingbird,
and to my amazement - this time I saw TWO of them,
and my mind wandered off over to where they were,
so I shared their freedom in some small way. I
imagined that maybe the two birds were lovers, and
they were eating some nectar together and talking
some interesting bird talk that only they could
understand. I felt like I could understand them
too somehow.
I guess it is now getting to be late fall - early
winter, so I didn't see any hummingbirds for awhile
now. It's kind of sad. I hope they are happy where
they are hiding right now.
Now don't be calling me girly or nothing like that,
I am a very muscular guy with plenty of tattos and
I am ALL man. 100% MAN. But I simply have a special
appreciation for the finer things of nature and how
beautiful they are. Whenever I can see them, I can
indirectly have a share in their freedom too, such
as a fluffy white cloud drifting across the sky -
when I look at it, for a moment, it feels like I
also have the freedom to freely drift that way too.
I miss the hummingbirds, and I like to think they saw
me watching them and they miss me too. You can bet
when spring rolls around, I will be eagerly watching
that spot where the wildflowers are to see if my 2
hummingbird friends return.
I think they will.
