I would call this historical fiction. It explains the conditions and events in 19th century Ireland in a way that made the lives of these oppressed people become more clear, but also influenced the way I look at oppression everywhere. It was also a very entertaining read. The conflict between the north and south in Ireland continues today, and this book will help you understand the root causes of this conflict. Of course, one must always remember that it IS fiction and may be skewed a bit toward one point of view. It is an older book, but I have read it several times and it is again on my list to re-read.
