I am very sad to say that a couple of weeks ago. A co-worker was headed home after a long day at work. She did not see a motorcycle rider and turned right into him. She does not smoke, drink but I do not know if she was on a cell phone at the time. Reports from a person behind her said she was fumbling with something inside her truck.
She works as a Respiratory Therapist at my hospital. And after the accident they did not have a paramedic on the scene. And they asked her to incubate the patient....the one she just hit! She was in shock and could not function.
They were transferring this gentleman to a hospital and he passed away in route. The local media and family of the man are asking for her to be made as an example, basically. Tons of nasty stuff is being posted that she and her children can read on the internet.
Her husband hit a deer and had a heart attack (due to all the stress) in route to the accident.
She has not been back to work yet but is scheduled to be back next week.
My question is this. How should people at work approach her? I know that she is grief stricken over the passing of a man due to her. And she is their to save lives and I feel that each person now she will see as this man laying limp in the road that she killed and could not help.
My heart is breaking for her and her family. I can understand how this gentleman's family must feel. But I know her as a very caring and loving wife and mother that would never hurt anyone.
Thank you for replying. All of us are stressed out to the max and really don't know what to say to her. How can we if we've never been in her position?
The man that was behind her is acting as if she was trying to find her cigarettes or cell phone.
I for one could have very well been in her shoes so to speak. As well as any one of us. But the media and the man's family as saying such harsh things about her. I've never heard her say anything bad against another person.
Nut when you take another's one's life you have to expect this. She never drank and both she and her husband was over the children's programs at church.
I just hope that she is strong enough to endure what might be coming to her.
It was definitely a wake up call for all those that drink and drive even though that was not a part of this.
