He was head of the knights Templar in Europe after they came back to Europe from the Crusades. He was killed when the various kings of Europe decided to do away with the Knights Templar (they had too much power and money). Tradition has it that he managed to smuggle out instructions for the KTs to go to Scotland and regroup, where they infiltrated the Mason's guild and became Freemasons. The Masons still honor him in many ways.
RayfromUSA: NOT the inquisition, wrong century. The inquistion was hundreds of years later.
You had it right until this addendum. DeMolay was burned alive by order of the French Inquisition in the service of King Phillip and Pope Clement. The year escapes me.Follow the earlier link where he is referred to as "James" de Molay.Anyway LadyFingers already made off with the prize.I'll check the year. Thanks.
He was the last Grand master of the order known as the Knights Templars, and yes some, part of the Masonic order in the USA has,a youth set up,not quite sure what, called the De Molays,we dont, have them yet in Scotland,by all accounts a good healthy way for young men,to learn principals and some decent morals.
wonderworker: Who was he? For an appropriate prize.
