How about you just running or walking your extra mile what would you say to break the ice ?

I would probably ask them what they found interesting about the book they were looking at, or what thier interest was in the particular section that they were in.
You are only trying to strike up a conversation at first, so just think of them as a friend you havn't met yet and get chatting

30 yrs experience...I also have 6 sisters..2 daughters an 16 nieces to learn from ..countless hen nights and socialising where I have tried them out ...and will continue to do so while I still can.... .......
