On Sunday I watched my baby board a Cessna and lay on my back in the grass waiting for the plane to spiral above the airfield til they reached 12,500 feet... then caught sight of a tiny, tiny, blip as she stepped out into the open air and went into freefall. Held my breath til the canopy opened and watched her sail to earth.
Wow. Her first jump (tandem, but still GREAT!) and my inspiration. Anybody want to skydive???

Crazy thing is - I'm terrified of heights too, and I hate flying in big planes. But a small plane is Ok for me - like a taxi with wings and you can talk to the pilot and see he's in control.
After watching several planeloads of jumpers, watching her do ground training, talking to instructors and spending hours at the drop zone I got really comfortable with the whole idea.
She said when they dived off the wheel strut she had no sensation of falling at all... just strong wind and feeling suspended til the canopy popped, then it was a beautiful, controlled, glide down.
