I'm a virgo and can relate to the control freak stuff you say, but it's usually more to do with controlling myself and perfectionism, than it is with controlling others. Virgos are generally timid, reserved, thoughtful and analytical, so it would be other parts of the persons chart that would come across as domineering ie perhaps leo, as mercury or venus are always within a sign either side of your sun sign position. As you're an aquarius, your shadow sign is Leo, so I'd guess that you had a virgo partner that was very leonine in temperament, which you may have felt as being controlling.
