Yeah that's a mad idea allright!
It should be the champions of each country, and maybe the second place team's aswell. But as you have said, it's all about the paper, and money make's the world go round! I never liked the idea of a team winning the Champions League and they are not champions of their domestic leauge..ie Liverpool!
But football goes by coefficient's so that's why teams from Scotland, Ireland and other poorer leauge's have to quailify. But it's kind of stupid because league's like England, Spain and Italy all do well each year in european football that there coefficient's rise each time and bump's there countries coefficient's up. Hence why England, Spain and i think Italy all have 4 spots each! Which is unfair because it make's it more difficult for other teams to get to the Champion's League and to raise the own countries coefficient's up!
