Hi G8! Yes, freedom is fundamental to this living being, that's for sure! And freedom has little to do with outer circumstances and everything to do with my mind and attitude!

hmmmm I have two pets and they are let out everyday and never run away....make me wonder what the Dali Lama was doing to his pets to make them not wish to come back ....or what type of pets he has had...

I don't think it has to do with never coming back, I has to do with the freedom of coming and going at will. The cats got out several times and returned in one to three weeks each time. If I'm not careful, they would run off again, but only to return. Between crazy people who hate animals and car traffic, it's too dangerous to let them do as they please. I walk my dog on a leash, whenever she sees another animal, she wants to chase it. At that moment in time, I bet she wishes she was unleashed and had the freedom to chase it.

I agree with you to a point Venus. Yes, our state of mind does make a bad situation better, but we will continue to challenge our outer circumstances until our soul within us feels 100% free. Those behind bars, prisoners of war, and perhaps a circumstance itself could make us feel a loss of freedom. I want to move, but circumstances prevent me from doing so at this time. There for I feel my freedom is limited because I can't do what I want to.Thank you for posting this!

It is your "wanting" to move that makes you feel less free, not the situation of not being able to move. After all, at one point you were content living where you live...so the only thing that has changed is your attitude toward it. JMO

When you find yourself in a place you didn't want to be in in the first place, ALL there can be is wanting to be elsewhere. That's where the desire for freedom kicks in.

freedom is just a state of mind...freedom to one is confinement to another...there is no complete freedom...you are trapped by the needs of living ...beasts and humans alike ...if there is total freedom it is in death only...and I guess we will all find out if this is true one day...I say enjoy the freedoms you have in your life and if you are not happy with the freedoms you have ,only you have the power to change this....till death, good luck to all of you on YOUR level of freedom....

Never had the problem of any of my Goldfish trying to escape! Perhaps they are happy with the exchange of freedom for regular meals and protection from predators, maybe they truly are smarter than they look.
