for a product or service that you need?

I have work for a plumber, electrician and carpenter (among others!) but can't afford to pay tradesmens prices.

Wouldn't it be great if we could go back to the old barter/exchange system?

I can paint/wallpaper/cook/clean/babysit/walk the dog/weed the garden etc. I would gladly do any of these things in exchange for getting a socket fixed, a tap replaced, wardrobes built etc etc.

So what would you offer in exchange for something you need?

I'm far from tight with money... if I have it. You don't know me so do not insult me!!!

I have no objection to paying someone to do a job. Prices have not come down much at all... I've checked.

just ignore him - I think its a great idea, just with bartering both parties need a clear agreement in advance on what each service is worth to the other so that there is no dissagreement at the end

I would barter with a carpenter anyday!!

Fair play missus, stick to your guns. The rates of the tradesmen you mentioned were diriculous during the boom years, and they haven't come down that much either because there's always some wally willing to pay through the nose for something.

To answer your question, i'd trade my dignity laugh eh no it's a nice thought, but people need money to put bread on the table at the end of the day, unless you bake?.......crumbcake? dunno

in Cork some people have a system called LETS, i dunno can you look it up, and is it in your area, which is exactly what you looking for, you trade a service for LETS points and you can redeem them against another service.......wave

I have seen these sort of thread on a few web sites recently iirc there is a website set up just for trading services (or trading stuff for them) i think it's a great idea , the only prob is you need to find two people that want what each other can offer

Very true. And I'm not suggesting doing away with paid work. Would never ever condone working for nothing.

I'm thinking more of a community/neighbourly thing really I suppose.

When I got my first house I needed a few small jobs done that I didn't know how to do at the time (shelves put up/appliances plumed). A friend and her husband hated wallpapering/painting. So her husband came and did all the little jobs for me and I painted her kitchen.

Ah well little handy jobs are a different story, plenty of handymen/women around that'll trade for stuff....usually extended family and stuff is the best bet conversing
