I am wondering as to whether they are common and how satisfying or not they can be? What are your experiences with them, and what recommendations, if any, you may have for anyone considering embarking on one?

depends on what you really mean by that...If you mean someone that is in a relationship and has a fling. If that is what you are asking then I have to say that it is a s wrong as having a fling in the "real" world...

Sometimes distance can be an issue for a while at least as there are people from all over the world on this site, nothing beats being with someone in person but untill that happens there are calls, emails, etc...sometimes two people have a special connection but may be in another country.

I stand corrected, but lets just say that wasn't what I was meaning....just asking about the experiances people have had when a relationship has been confined to the net for the time being at least.moping bouquet

I think perhaps that could be considered to be friendship/flirting...but I think a fling perhaps is when things have escalated and hotted up quite dramatically. Maybe?

If there are rules...please explain? Someone?roll eyes

I don't think there are any rules so to speak...It all depends on the indivduals and how far they want it to go...and how serious they are about having a relationship..Just my opinion though...
