Animalattraction: Selfishness is the key. My Republican friends used to hate me comparing the Celtic Tiger to Britain under Thatcher. It was so similar; the cars, the houses, etc. Now it is the selfishness of Thatcherism that pervades Ireland.
The view now is that I will vote for "my Man" because he will be the best for my community & me. I don't care about teenagers dying for the want of a simple room or bankers never being held to account.
Many people have money saved that they are too scared to spend. Most of the rural people around me had the sense to realise that there would be a crash & got out before it was too late. In truth many people would welcome the IMF. Yes it would be tough but we would trust them more than our own government.
I suspect that the old loyalties combined with a lack of a competent opposition will ensure that FF do not get wiped out as they should. The real question is who the hell do you vote for ?. Does anyone really believe than Kenny will be better ?.
I actually believe Kenny would be worse and Gilmore would be evrn worse than Biffo or Kenny. I'd welcome the IMF and the day its announced that the IMF have been asked to come in I'll be getting absolutely hammered in celebration because quite frankly none of the political parties have the balls to make the really tough decisions that are necessary, it will be ruthless but it would be effective from a long term point of view.
