The vote in Parliament today was unanimous, to give the last veteran of WW1 a state funeral when the time comes. There are only 3 veterans of this war still alive and they are all 105 years old. The Dominion Institute started the petition in early November to have an act of Parliament to make his to happen. Since Nov 6, over 100,000 Canadians signed the on-line petition.

Im not sure where they are all living. I think one of them lives at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. The state funeral is for the last of the three to pass away. The funeral isn't for that man as an individual, but for the 600,000 Canadians that served in WW1. The surviving vets are humble men, but they understand the symbolism of this national gesture of gratitude.

My 4 year old son's half brother is serving in Afghanistan as we speak. He spoke to my little guy from a defensive position there via radio phone just this morning. My little guy told his brother he loved him and to stay safe. We are both wearing our poppies until he gets home.canada

Good for you Spagooch...

I grew up with my father in the Armed Forces, and my brother is in the Navy so I always have a place in my heart for members of the Armed Services. Every Day we should honour our troops and support the campaign to wear red on Fridays in support of them.

I heard on the CBC today that one of the three survivors is taking himself off the list for the state funeral. Apparently, though he served in the Canadian Army during WW1, he became an American citizen many years ago. He has been living in Spokane, Washington since before WW2.

Down to two.
