It was a surreal experience arriving at the airport for a 6:30 AM flight and to see the wretched NWA mechanics and their families manning picket lines. It must be very discouraging to see that not only are the other unions ignoring the picket line but also the airline continues to fly as if nothing had happened.
We were on our way to Memphis, TN and then onwards to Montego Bay, Jamaica. The flight from Minneapolis was late in taking off due to a computer failure which meant they couldn’t update the baggage information for our flight and we seriously feared missing our connection to Jamaica and having to spend Friday night in Memphis—perhaps there are worst places to be stuck in, but our heart was set on Jamaica. Thankfully, we made our connection and landed in Jamaica at 1:00 PM arriving to a welcoming chorus of Jamaican singers as we winded our way through immigration and customs.
We were bused to the Sandals Resort where we were warmly received with flutes of champagne. Sandals Resort is an all-inclusive resort which means everything (food, drinks, entertainment, sports) is included; this may not be for everyone, especially if you want to engage in some cultural tourism (ethnographical trips I kept telling TallB) but is perfect if you want to spend a hedonistic long weekend in the sun, luxuriating in the warm waters of the Caribbean. We are both into watching what we eat and exercising a lot, but from Friday through Tuesday we ate and drank way too much and the only exercise I got was towing TallB through water like a horse.
I was able to convince TallB on Monday to accompany me the city to an area that has the unlikely moniker of “Hip Strip”. We dined at a local restaurant on goat curry and Jamaican jerk chicken followed by Jamaican Rum Pudding. Later we strolled on the strip looking at the small stores but TallB was starting to attract too much attention from the locals and we decided to call it an evening.
Our trip back to the airport was incredible. The narrow two-way road was jammed with traffic but our driver went right in the oncoming lane, parting the traffic—with the connivance of the local police—like a modern day Moses. He made the trip in less than 10 minutes whereas I couldn’t have done it in two hours!
Now we’re back in Minneapolis with a nice tan and an entirely new attitude.
