I think online is a safe way to get to know someone inside and out -- all day my fiancee and I would send each other messages, work related photos, voice messages, skype, facebook... when we finally met in person there was no awkwardness - we knew each other inside and out...

If it was just a penpal/email/text message relationship then that would be different.. It would be difficult to determine if she was genuine...
