Well, this is not easy, but I think it's the boy's way of calling for attention. We all know that at certain times food is comfort, if we don't feel loved, or if something else is lacking. I wonder if his mom is going out to work every day and he has too much time on his own.

The legal system within society cannot interfere with all family matters. obviously theres issues here of course, but where dyou draw the line with parenting/ should the children of alcoholics, drug addicts, manic depressives, OCD etc etc all be threatened in the same way? perhaps intervention is needeed but quite frankly, theres issues of one sort or another in most peoples upbringing. They threaten with taking away but have not provided any viable solutions to this kids problems, therefore its unfair to intervene until they can provide a sustainable solution.

the child in question is back now with his mother and Social services is over looking the case as a judge ruled his return to the mother under supervision of social services.....

and, also, the kid has been getting his way for a loooong time. The parents give up, and give in.
If they had worked long term with the family... maybe temporary out of home? Or, hospitalization.
I dunno enough about the situation just by going on one report.
