I wanted to post something to the forum this morning but I can't think of anything to say. So I guess I'll just write whatever comes to mind.
It's 03:35 right now, and I can hear peope (yes, peope) screaming and arguing outside my fine residence here in the middle of what is known as Hamilton's "crack central." (My standard of living declined somewhat in the wake of my recent separation.) I think about 90% of the murders in his city in the last twenty years have ocurred within about 5 blocks of my house. Last summer a crackhead was killed with a hammer about four blocks from me.
I saw something on the net tonight about a new show about a race to Mars where, it is hoped, life will be found. This conflicts with something I saw recently on the National Geographic channel speculating on the possibility of life being found on Europa. I think Europa is a better bet. There was mention on the NG channel that, according to one formula, the milky way galaxy, alone, is host about 10,ooo planet's with intelligent life (please, no quiffs about human intelligence being an oxymoron.)
Discussing the damage done by professional interlopers this evening at the cab stand I attempted to apply my interpretation of something I read recently in "The lessons of History." (Will and Arial(?) Durant). The welfare state manages to skew the distribution of people adept at survival skills by sending out checks to those who most lack those skills. These people tend to have high birthrates. The more cash they get from the government, the more they tend to procreate. Without a serious reversal in social policy, this process will eventually destroy us all.
maybe this is why the race is on to get to other planets - they will promptly open social security offices there and close them down on earth - problems solved!
maybe this will also reduce the armies as most of the cannon fodder also comes from these high birth rate areas - just a thought
